  • The Blackout - did you watch it?

    How good was that!!!?

Really brought to light how much we rely on power, and showed things you maybe wouldn't otherwise think would be affected, like being in hospital. You just assume that everything will be backed up!

And if like a lot of us, you're aiming to be self sufficient - take heed, it may not be to your advantage!

Missed it, but it's on 4/7 tonight at 9pm - will try to remember.

It's scary to think it could really happen so easily!

I remember the power cuts of 1972. I learnt to drive that year, and all my evening lessons were in areas without street lighting. It was a real shock when those lights came back on

Like VC lived through it in the 70s, spotted a funny thing the other day the traffic lights were out and there was a kid stood there pushing the button to cross the road she stood there not knowing how to cross without the greenman saying she could.

Saw about 1 minute of it and gave up.
As said don't recall the fall of civilisation in the 70's, don't recall Canada reverting to the stone age when they lost extensive power for several days.
Friends in Florida got hit by the end of a hurricane and no power for 8 days.
So I gather from that that the producers think it is only us that will revert to barbarity in hours if not minutes.

Well I enjoyed it, it showed what may happen over 5 days, not hours, and how power is REALLY backed up in services/shops etc. of course you always get the extremist/rioters etc but it wasn't ALL about that, it showed a lot of scenarios, I don't think it was in any way exaggerated and pretty much showed EXACTLY what would happen to this country if this happened.

                  And I don't use Facebook so I wouldn't care

You should see the kinetic energy fail over "generators" that run in certain datacentre that I've a few things in - like huge weighted hamster wheels. Pretty damn cool - they'll continue to run for x amount of hours and can generate something like a megawatt just on their spooling - amazing

Regarding a cyber-attack - you'd be surprised at the amount of automated scripts running every day trying to comprise websites (even forums, such as this). I've a log of injection style attacks running this very minute on a web-facing site I'm working on at work - crazy! Once they're in, and have 'infected' / hijacked a script they become part of a huge botnet. Back in my youth I used to enjoy taking small botnets down / looking into what viruses actually did.

I did, until the telly turned itself off. Freaked me out a bit until I worked out the sleep timer was on!

Chris, I'd love to have that kind of knowledge - wouldn't know where to start, but it fascinates me.

We watched the Earthquakes thing with Prof Iain Stewart, instead. Really enjoyed it, but such a shame it wasn't on HD though - could've been even better.

Nah. Nope. No idea what that all is

I've taken the programme though, will save it for a rainy day (a rainy day when England isn't playing)
