We've got quite a few of these now, they are pretty good, although they do seem to be dimmer than the claimed "equivalent".

You may not save as much energy as you think, though: in winter, the central heating is going to be working harder than before to make up for that 370 watts of heat that isn't being provided by the inefficient light bulbs.

I want to know whether anyone has actually tried this (heating a room, not a GH) - and does it work?

If I could find my stash of tealights I'd give it a go. This ruddy house is miserably cold. The loft is insulated, but the walls obviously are not, and the windows are just diabolical - secondary glazing units that don't fit. At least we have fresh air, I guess!

Last winter it cost us an absolute fortune to run the ruddy storage radiators, and the house was always cold. I do object to wearing layer upon layer of clothing indoors, but I also object to the astronomical bills.

              Martin,

The 370 watts of heat energy produced by the light bulbs is produced at ceiling level I.E. 8ft 6" above the ground and that's where most of it will stay. Just fetch your GH thermometer and take a couple of readings You will be amazed at the difference between ground level, 3ft high and ceiling height. My two radiators produce 5932 watts so I wouldn't even feel the difference if there was any.

Now for the 'T' lights in flower pots, this is all over the internet and always gives me a chuckle. As for the Mail On Line they can't even get their air flow diagrams correct.

First question can this method warm a room, well yes is the short answer but by how much is the question.

A 'T' light will produce about 52 watts per hour so 4 lights = 208 watts round about 2 100watt light bulbs. Putting them in flowers pots or gold lined cans won't make them produce any more heat just alter the air circulation pattern.

Trying to envisage the size of the room in the video is difficult but it is obviously in an attic and is very small. If there were no other heat sources at all then the 'T' light device would give a temperature difference between external and internal air of about 1'C worst and 2'C best depending on insulation levels.

The other known heat sources are the computer and screen and the electric lamp both will equal the output of the 'T' lights. Then there are unknown heat sources, if the room below is heated to 16'C and assuming a wooden floor this will increase the attic room temperature by around 5'C Then there is the obvious chimney in the room if this is in use it to will add to the warmth of the room.

Then cost if you can buy 'T' lights for £1 per 100 and I have not seen them at this price and you walk to the point of sale then yes they are slightly cheaper than gas.

A final point they are burning oxygen from the atmosphere and that lovely yellow/smoky flame is producing carbon monoxide, so to be safe you have to have a small amount of fresh air entering the room.

That's an awful lot of words to say in effect no they won't work to any serious degree in a house.

I haven't watched this video for a while but I think he says he lives on a boat - so we're talking about a small cabin, probably half underwater.
Those T lights are £1.75 for 100 'cos I bought some this week - but you do get 2 "free" bags to store them in

VC yes he has a boat but this is filmed at his house.

It might make sense in say a modern canal barge where the rooms are small and the insulation excellent.

I do have a lot of energy efficient bulbs but no LCD's (is that the same as LED's?) having looked them up i was shocked at the price of them however, we have a lot of chandiliers and to replace 6 or 8 bulbs is expensive.

No wonder, when we're all being held to ransom by the Big Six

Thanks for the input, I didn't think it was a goer, and we don't use candles anyway because of the parrot (remember what happened to the canaries in the mines)

We could just invite loads of friends/family around and share body heat ...but knowing my lot they'd expect to be fed - so perhaps not a saving LOL

Hi Bill, sorry my mistake yes I am talking about 'light emitting diodes'.

I have 2 x 4 GU10 lamp fixtures in the lounge and used to have 4 x 42 watt halogens in each.

I bought 2 packs of 3, 1.4 watt LEDs for general lighting cost £9-98p per pack.

Then 2, 5 watt bulbs to point at where SWMBO and I sit for reading purposes, these are £9-98p each.

The 5 watt LEDs give the same light as a 42 watt halogen so even I can sit and read my books with no problem.

Two plus's each unit now consumes 9.2 watts instead of 168 watts and bulb life (yet to be proved by myself but I live in hope) is supposed to be 30,000hrs or 13 years at my level of usage.
