  • Food waste!

A Report finds that "Up to two-fifths of fruit and veg is thrown away because its ugly".
Also that the average household throws away more than 5kgs /11lbs of food a week
I'm not sure I buy that much food, let alone throw it away

Up to two-fifths of fruit and veg crop is wasted because it is 'ugly', report finds | Environment | theguardian.com

My OH is always making soup. Fortunately some stilton helps to sweeten the taste haha

I'll take ugly and tasty over pretty and blech any day of the week. In fact, some of my best fruit and vegetables looked like they were (repeatedly) beaten with the ugly stick. But don't tell the supermarket-addicts

She won't even eat curly french beans

You mean there is ugly veg and fruit?
Everything I grow are the most perfect, beautiful and attractive items on the planet.

It's such a shame that all that wholesome and tasty food is wasted because we are programmed by supermarkets to only buy perfect looking fruit and veg!

With the levels of food poverty both here and abroad I would like to hope that the produce that was rejected is given to those in need - but I have a horrid feeling it ends up rotting or being burned!

                Sad state of affairs.

I think it's partly to do with serving yourself in the supermarkets. People sort through and pick out the most perfect fruit/veg, so the more standardised it is, the less sorting is done, and less left on the shelves. Off the market you take what's put in the bag. You may grumble a bit if you get home and find a bruised one at the bottom, but at market, not supermarket, prices, you cut out the bruise and use it anyway.

My ex-Chef Hubby is terrible for throwing stuff away - drives me potty. Recently, I've started insisting 'we' keep the Calabrese stalks and carrot tops an' tails for stock/soup. At first he looked at me like I was barmy, then, that night, we watched a famous TV Chef do the same, and Hubby just smirked at me.

The following day, I insisted he bunged a load of tomatoes I'd been given, in the oven when he was roasting our Sunday meal. I started 'prepping' other 'waste' veg, got the frown from him, then he took over and made the most delicious soup I've ever tasted!

                    1:0 to me, I reckon!

I see our waste bin not as the final decision but as a display cabinet where produce is given a second chance, my wife is a serial thower-awayer whereas I am a recycleamaniac. I often fetch perfectly good fruit out of the bin, wash it and replace it in the fruit bowl where it gets eaten. I scrape the green mould off my mature cheddar to reveal a perfect pungent ploughmans piece. My son, a proffesional chef goes mad at me quoting health and safety regs until he's blue in the face but Ive lived this long by flaunting the rules so I guess I'm doing it right. Where I dont compromise is anything to do with meat etc.

It's the government,s fault all stupid health and safety reason, I work for local council who insist that all food leftover for functions/conferences has to be thrown not given to staff in case there,s comeback..so I watch tons of food being bagged and binned all the time....what a shear waste.

the ugly fruit and veg and the pretty fruit and veg all look the same when peeled and chopped anyway, and the ugly fruit that YOU grew always tastes better than anybody elses pretty fruit

Whilst the ugly fruit and veg mostly don't make it on to the supermarket shelves it isn't thrown away. Generally it goes into the catering industry as prepped veg or as ingredients.

At home its easy to sort, just buy what you need! Any left overs in our home is either reincorporated into some thing else, fed to the chooks or if they don't like it (onion skins etc) composted.

The weekly supermarket shop has a lot to answer for but its not practical for lots of people to shop several times a week.
