  • Well, I don't appear to have been too productive today, but at least I got some mowing/leaf collecting done before the rain set in again. Whether I'll ever get the rest of it done remains to be seen! These dark evenings are still catching me out, too.

    Coffee?

      • I have been having a busy weekend - it's my turn to host our monthly on-line quiltalong, so I'm busy doing daft things to entertain an international audience - chocolate sweet making later, as light relief from sewing; Christmas quiz, and a tutorial on making Christmas decorations tomorrow.

Oh - and a 10k cross country race tomorrow morning too...

          • Well, it's wonderful to be home. What was intended to be a 4 day mini-break in Rome turned out to be a 12 day 'stress fest'. OH collapsed in the street on our second day there, ambulance job, and then spent the next 11 days in hospital .... he was quite poorly for a little while and properly frightened me! But the medical staff were wonderful and incredibly thorough and let him out yesterday so that he could get straight into a taxi and go to the airport. I spent an inordinate amount of time getting familiar with the interior architecture of a couple of hospitals ... which was not the plan! But October is a really nice time of year in Rome Can't tell you how glad I was to see a rainy Birmingham Airport though.

From the carnage I've just witnessed? No......But at least they stuffed healthily.

Hazel, your applique idea is fine. You can do some very neat applique with freezer paper too. Bondaweb is also very handy.

I had planned a constructive afternoon needleworkwise. No. It didn't happen - quite the opposite, with lots of deconstructive unpicking. The table dawdler was going really well, nearly finished, until I stitched on some contrasting grosgrain ribbon. One final press with the iron and then I could deliver it to my client. But, as I said, no. The ribbon shrank when pressed, pulling the cotton table dawdler into millions of tiny puckers. So I've just sat and unpicked 230" of ribbon, with tiny machine stitching on both edges. Tomorrow, I will pre-shrink more ribbon and sew it all together again. Cannot wait to see the back of it.

The only thing I have managed is 4kg of milk chocolate and 2.5 of white slowly melting in the temperer.

Shall I have coffee, or is it too late now?

                  • That puts a whole different spin on 'When in Rome' susie. The last time I was in the hospital I was in Withybush West Wales.

I met a lovely family from New Zealand there and they said that when they need to go to see the doctor they have either a 1 1/2 hour drive to the surgery or a 1 1/2 hour drive in the opposite direction to the doctors home. I thought about this for a bit and said, well at least you get to see them 3 hours before me in our local a&e....

                    Glad all is well again.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

                    • I broke my foot in Crete and it was so difficult when you didn't understand the language or the procedures. I had to pay for everything upfront before they'd do anything. - so pay the doctor to examine my foot, then pay for the Xrays, then pay for the results and to be plastered and finally buy some crutches that my husband swore must have been handcrafted from olive wood - they were so expensive.
Further complicated by not having enough cash with us and all the traveller's cheques were in my name. Before we could buy the crutches, I had to hobble out to the bank to change some traveller's cheques.
Learnt a useful lesson that holiday - to have traveller's cheques in both names.
Hope you didn't have these problems Susie - its bad enough being ill abroad.

Oh poor you, how awful and what a pity, Rome is a lovely city, so you will definitely need to go again together. I can understand how pleased you must be to be back home. Hope husband is ok

                              • Regarding the NHS, I happen to be very proud of our system, When I go to see my doctor I have hardly sat down before I am called in, same with A&E except for weekend evenings when all the scum bags are vomitting all over the place. I have had 4 major operations and been treated superbly.
We all keep being told America has the finest health service, yes maybe, if your well off, the 45 million Americans who cant afford insurance dont fare so well, I know, I have spoken to many of them.
Unfortunately people dont appreciate what they have until it has gone. Being diabetic I get a check up every three months, eye tests, free prescriptions etc, If I was in America I would have to travel to Canada to buy medication because the insurance driven prices in the USA are devastatingly high.
The rest of the world look at our NHS with envy, May it live on forever.
