Hi all. Cleaning dilemma

Hi to you all. This is my first proper post, I commented on something last week. I am now going really off the gyo subject but, I am a 'domestic goddess' to a few households, just to bring in the coppers. That is, when I am not trying to make order in our new patch of land. I ramble a bit, sorry. QUESTION. at what point do you stop when cleaning a faked aged cupboard? Do you take off or leave on the greasy prints and verdigris, shine up the brassware? and the flaky paint? does that stay on?
I know where I am with real antiques, and new modern furniture. This fad for faked age has me foxed. Just like the fad for faded dead roses in a basket???

Sorry for the rant. I just have to ask someone. I daren't comment to the owners of these things. I may not have a job longer if I did.

By the way I am really enjoying reading all the really helpful and informative posts here.
I have some garden questions but will ask them elsewhere.

Well, that's a difficult one. Personally, I would clean off finger prints, leave the verdigris, flaky paint..... but it's very personal. I think you'll have to ask just how clean she wants it hahaha

Better to ask than clean it all up and find out that's not what she wants.

Can't help, sorry. Gardening I do, cleaning I don't. All my furniture is covered in fingerprints and looks aged........bit like me ......maybe not the fingerprints

Spend as much time cleaning it as you would the other furniture in the room. They would be equally dirty.

IF you can find out who made the furniture,maybe ask them the best way to treat it,if not,ask your client for advice,after all,they would not thankyou for making a mistake whoops,when i did cleaning,i asked,better they know you care what you do,no shame or failure on asking,ther is usualy instructions come with things,so ask for them,

I'd just dust it, and maybe a gentle wipe over with a soft damp cloth, but try not to remove too much of the effect.

Who am I kidding, I'd turn the lights out so you couldn't see the dust - it's what I do at home lol.

I had a friend who used to take the bulb out of the bathroom light just for that purpose Just saying.

I'd also go with just cleaning of the greasy finger marks and leave it at that.

I'd leave the greasy finger marks too as they are part of the distressed effect. They've probably been daubed deliberately

Thanks to those who took me seriously. Ye some was a bit of a rant but I really am concerned as I am a trifle heavy-handed. once pushed a pane of glass out while cleaning it. OK the people knew it was loose and never told me till afterwards but it was a shock. a definite oops. I think I will stop at a damp dust. Thanks. Fortunately most of my clients have me on different tasks. for one I have all his plants to care for. probably safer.
