  • What are the essential tools and equipment I need for starting up

Morning all I would appreciate some input about what I should buy in terms of tools and equipment. And I've seen the term raised beds - do I need these ?

    A fork.
It'll work for digging, moving stuff, raking, and leaning on

A fork is the most important, a spade is also useful, a rake and a trowel would come in handy too. Secateurs for when you need to start pruning plants back, but if you're starting from scratch you don't need those straight away.

Raised beds are not essential. I didn't have any in my garden, although I am building some for my allotment (so that I can put weed matting down for pathways and minimise weeding required). If you think you need them, you can always build them from scratch, I built mine for very little money by using palletwood.

Check out your local freecycle - there may be garden tools, wheelbarrows, compost bins etc on offer for nowt Or car boot sales.
Basic tools are spade, fork, secateurs, trowel.
You don't need raised beds - its just a way of outlining an individual veg plot, usually with the intetion of raising the soil level within the enclosure. It can be restrictive as, in the early days, you may not be sure exactly where you want those beds to be.

I agree, it is so easy to fall for all the advertising bumf, but you actualy NEED very little, just basic tools. All the other stuff can come to make life a little easier (probably) in time.
You can make compost just in a heap on the ground with a carpet on top to keep too much rain off it. Wooden sides such as old boards or pallets stop it spreading all over the place.
Raised bed mean easier weeding, more control over the soil etc but they are really just ground, only a bit higher.

Keep them both and do them up. Price up new sheds and GHs and see if that convinces you!

Do you need a GH door?............polythene will be fine as most of the year it will be off anyway.

Try and keep the GH and shed and spend your money instead of tools.

essential tools, spade, fork rake and hoe. You can do everything with that combination for growing veg. For fruit you can add secateurs and a lopper.

If your shed is decrepit and you haven't got the funds to replace it, just patch up with whatever you can get your hands on until you can buy a better one or better still a new un.
