OK, before I start on this I need to point out that any replies need to avoid the use of any techy terms or I'll still be none the wiser . Anyway, just been given an iphone 5 work phone, it's a reconditioned one and therefore has no instructions. Have worked out the basics (although took me a while to work out where to put the sim card!) and can now make calls etc but am struggling with using the rest of it. It doesn't help that I keep trying to click the right or left hand side of the main button to do stuff as you can on my android (Samsung) personal phone but obviously it doesn't have that feature but I can't find where the equivalent features are . It's simple stuff like how to go backwards up menus, sometimes there's an option at the top of the screen but not always and the only way I've found to close things totally is to press the middle button then double click it, hold down the middle button then click the little cross - can't believe this is the only way as it is very action intensive. So far it's taken up far too much of my time just to do simple stuff like even check the phone book. Does anybody know of a nice simple online manual - the only stuff I can find is unhelpful and uses loads of jargon and mainly seems to revolve around downloading apps and checking what apps are open - I'd prefer to just close them as I leave them, surely not too much to ask and much tidier.

Just click the home button at the bottom of the phone and you can tap on whatever app you need from there.

Sorry Mark, I don't understand, I'm talking about closing apps as I leave them or just going up a level rather than opening anything new. Don't like 1001 things open at the same time, it just wastes battery and the only way I can find to close things is very tortuous so I can't believe there isn't an easier way but google isn't helping

You don't need to close apps. Unless you are seeing some performance issue then it's not necessary.

Like you Alison, I have the Samsung. Is it not the same principle whereby the right button takes you back?

I wouldn't dream of calling you a dummy Alison but there's a little guide here, hope you manage to find your way around it:

Yes, find sending messages etc, it's just that you can't then go back a step afterwards or even close the app, all seems a bit messy to me, I like to turn things off when I finish and it seems you have to press the start button to go back to the home screen then press the start button twice then swipe anything you want to close out the way - seems all a bit daft but there you go. Didn't get any instructions as it's a reconditioned phone but from what I hear the actual instruction manual is a bit pants anyway.

iphones don't have a right (or left for that matter) button, just one in the middle. I am however in danger of breaking the case on the right as I keep trying to press there and obviously nothing happens

No, I am a dummy when it comes to this so thanks - need something basic so will have a look to see if it helps but from what the users seem to be saying it might not actually do what I would have thought was a basic function. Thanks.

Looked a perfect sheet, unfortunately it's for the previous operating system . Luckily it's only a work phone so I won't use it for much apart from e-mail and talking so can rely on my good old Samsung for everything else

Apple products don't work in the same way as others. You just click the central button ad that takes you back to the home screen where you can choose your next app. Or swipe to get you back to open apps.

I leave my apps open, there's not many that I don't use regularly throughout the day. Though once you got your head around swiping its much easier and faster than clicking buttons. I think you can close two at a time if you swipe up using 2 fingers instead of 1. You will be converted soon - honest!

If you double click or (click twice) on the main button the apps you have open will appear at the bottom of the screen.
Place your finger lightly on one of the apps and a sign like a minus sign in maths will come up alongside each app. Just touch this minus sign and your app will close.
                          Hope this is helpful.

That's the old operating system, Bramble, but I have worked it out on os7 (no cross, just swipe). It's OK but I still don't want to leave things open when not in use, it's like leaving the door unlocked when not you go to bed. Will have to do the tortuous route each time

It doesn't leave them 'open' Alison. When you click on the bottom button, it 'closes' them.
