  • Am I being unresonable?

    So [sorry G4]...

so we have a community garden. Which me and my business partner [we have a training company that run from the gardens but 'rent' the space from the garden to ensure the garden has income]...we have spent hundreds of hours there working hard to transform it to a nice environment and teaching space, and we are not anywhere near halfway there. We have done this for no pay.

All the crops that were grown, were from my own personal seed stash.

We use the crops to feed our volunteers, and anyone coming onto the gardens, and if we sell any the money goes into petty cash to save up for community tools - heavy duty shredder etc.

We were contacted by someone wanting to do a 'community meal' event and wanting food donated from community gardens. We say that 'actually we have our own events that week [tomorrow and thursday] and ask us again on the friday and if we have any, we'll get back to you'.

It turns out that the event isn't being open to the community, but the wider network of the bloke who is arranging it. He works for Friends of the Earth. And most people going are what I would term 'professional back slappers'. The event is badged as a FOTE event.

Food from community gardens [correct me if I am wrong] should go to the people that grew it or helped on the garden, be offered to the local community for a reduced rate, and given to those on low incomes or the homeless. NOT used for feeding people who are waged and just happen to be one or two facebook friends away from the organiser.

The organiser as far as I am aware has never picked up a tool in his life, and that's all I'll say about him.

Am I being unreasonable to be infuriated that the food being eaten by this bunch was mainly donated by community gardens who were not aware who would be eating it?

    Poll to follow...

No, you're not being unreasonable (for a change! ) so I'll let you off the 'so'

I agree with you that it's a ruddy cheek! I can't stand all this 'back-slapping' it drives me nuts.

Me too...other issues are they approached me and I said we were using it for our own volunteers; then they approached my business partner and asked her, and she gave them the same response and then they posted on their planning page that we would help. If I hadn't gotten so angry at them approaching her after me, I'd not have looked into it so deep and now I have..I have the rage.

Why can't FOTE pay for their own food? Ask them for a donation towards the gardens Zaz. Better yet, post that they have offered one....

I think it's only him from FOTE that is going...the rest are nottingham people. I don't want a donation as we aren't giving them anything...all our spare produce WILL be eaten by our volunteers this week.

You're not being at all unreasonable Zaz. Hope his event is a total washout and the food has to be distributed in the community - yours.

It's not even in our area! He doesn't even work in the area that they are holding the flippin event. It's not EVEN HIS PATCH.

              Grrrr.

Don't see why he should expect you to give him something for nothing. If you were going to be part of the event then fair enough but as you are not then he should just accept your answer. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

That's the point - he is pressurising and publishing that people have said they will support so it looks bad if they don't...but then saying 'it's all donated by community gardens so it's their choice' but they didn't know it was for his mates and his mates' mates.

Its a tricky one, it would be difficult to contradict him and not look bad which is probably what he is hoping. I would be tempted to go for the moral high ground, say nothing and if anyone asks just say that you give any surplus to the poor and homeless and leave it at that.

You definitely should be infuriated, it's well out of order on every level

I'd be very tempted to contact Friends of the Earth and ask them if they know what he's up to in their name. Doesn't make them look good does it?

Do the other people on his list of donators know what he's up to?

Oh I have no issues with contradicting him, I've made it quite clear in private messages that I think it's disgusting and have posted about my opinions on the event page. A couple of others have nicely expressed concerns that it wasn't advertised outside of his facebook network and that they thought it was for the community; but they aren't horrid and outspoken like me.

I have posted that it's the opposite of a harvest festival. Taking from people who deserve it and giving it to people who can afford it.

If they didn't before they do now! I shall sit and see what happens...I had the rage with him and the more I keep digging the worse it looks.

I think community gardens could lose their licence if they don't give surplus to community groups; and he's got people from the council ringing round their allotments for donations; I don't think she has a clue what's going on...well, not yet.

You could say that they can have all the food they wish but that you have just sprayed it all with toxic chemicals.

We are totally organic Bill so nobody is going to believe that one. Not that I would donate anyway.

His argument is that he posted it on Facebook so that means 'the public' are attending.
