I don't know if this will be of interest to anyone, but I have recently been involved with this scheme.

Basically if you have an old non-condensing type of boiler and you are on certain benefits i.e. pension credit or many others. You can apply for a totally free modern condensing boiler.

It matters not whether you are in private rented accommodation or own your own home.

For once it does what it says on the can, no cost to you or your landlord what so ever. And if you have an older type of boiler you could make a good saving on your energy bills.

This business of getting free stuff provided you are on certain benefits stinks, what about someone who is not well off but not on benefits? people are encouraged to apply for benefits. it all seems wrong to me. You can bet your bottom dollar being a simple pensioner wont qualify you.

Green Deal? - that's a government funded loan... may be wrapped in the description though, but it's probably the 'ECO' funding that's going around. (I've written a system to actually book these boilers in, etc etc). Green Deal is a complete home evaluation - which can cover boilers, insulation (inc double glazing), draft proofing, yada yada.

We see a "few" installers using the cheaper end of the market boilers to maximize their profit. Still, the customer actually benefits.

DR - here it's 7 years old (6 actually, but to be on the safe side, it's down as 7).

Bill - well the eco scheme is income/benefit based as that's what the quota was aimed at. With the Green Deal loan, it's open to anybody... the installer(s) get their cut back through the cost saved.

There's going to be a massive push on Solar soon too, if you fit in the right radiation band

Compulsory for social landlords to fit it on the right facing roofs?

No, not compulsory. There's been a huge investment by a few bigiwigs (or something like that, I don't know the details, nor do I wish to ) - subject to a few terms.. (pitch, direction, size). no cost to the customer at all - they get the free electricity, but the investor will take any surplus energy produced.

The investors want the new panels out there, so are partnering with where I work to target the relevant houses. I think Birmingham is in the right band (where the suns rays fall at a certain angle to hit certain pitched roofs) or something like that. *shrug* I've only heard details in passing and was asked to write a new bit of software to do this and that to allow us to send people out to investigate.

We had a salesman round a couple of months ago. He told us our roof for just right for his companies panels, big enough and right facing, so I invited him into the back garden to have a look to see if he thought it was right for solar panels.
Cos the ones already on it look lovely :-D

With regards to the standard of the boilers fitted. The only people I have seen using cheapish boilers are B&Q they tend to use the same boilers they sell in store. Carp is about the right word.

The private installation companies use better boilers in order to get a good guarantee. Most at this time seem to be installing Ideal boilers. Theirs is a new range after the disastrous Isar/Icos debacle and they are trying to regain the once good reputation. To tempt installers to use them they are offering a 7 year guarantee.

The installers are screened/vetted before being allowed on to the scheme and of course all installations have to be registered on the Gas Safe data base.

Bill most people on benefits have a genuine need. Yes there are scroungers and fiddlers and working in private rented property I meet quite a few.

If you are a pensioner on pension credits then yes you will qualify.

Indeed - I was offered a choice between Bosch and Ideal when I had my c/combi installed - despite the warranty (which, was matched by Bosch in the end anyway!).. I decided on the Bosch, parts are readily available, the track record etc..

Shame for Ideal I guess, it was quite a bit cheaper

Pots - I can give you a list as long as your arm if you want to see which installers are using cheap(o?) boilers.. Nationally too! Should see some of the complaints we've had heh, bonkers.

But you aren't going to get one off those installed within a price range of £2000.

Glad you've said that, we had to have a new boiler few weeks ago, as ours was 'condemned', new Worcester boiler installed, and working well.

No deal for us tho!

Yes you pay more, but you get a top of the range boiler, good guarantee's, great after sales service.

There isn't much not to like about Worcester.


I have Worcester's on my round that were installed well over 20 years ago and they are still going strong.
