Random Thought of the day...

I was out walking the dog this morning and we've had quite a hard frost overnight. However in the middle of one of the fields I cross is a leafless oak tree, approx 60ft tall and round, with its canopy starting 20ft off the ground. Below this bare tree there is no frost at all.

Why is that?

Have the leaves dropped if so I think it may be that the decomposition of the leaves are producing a little heat

No there were no leaves under it, the wind has carried them away.

Because there wasn't enough moisture on the grass underneath to show a frost?

I did a little goggle search and have the answer, should I say or would you like to keep guessing?

Stored heat in the ground from when it did have leaves ??

The moles have set up home under the tree and there network of tunnels have a sort of streetlight facility therefor producing heat to stop a frost unseen to the mere mortal lol

Heat from the tree roots?
They might be un-cultured moles, swearing and drinking too much!

Warmer air is trapped under the canopy while elsewhere it just rises and is lost?

When it snows in the forests the snow around the tree trunks is usually less deep, and the tree hole can suck you in if you get too close when skiing through the trees. We had to dig a snowboarder out once who was buried head first. Sounds funny but people die every year in tree holes.

My guess is that early this morning (just as the sun was rising) a rather ample milk maid sat there generating a lot of heat, Maybe even the farmer popped along and generated some more heat.

My real guess would be that a big oak tree contains a lot of water that acts as a heat sink.
