In 1700 one of my wealthy ancestors died and left his son the sum of one shillng because he did not approve of his sons marriage. The son nailed it to his fathers coffin with a note saying he could have the damn thing back. The first born male of each generation have all been named Harry William as is my son which makes geneology a little more difficult. The whole subject of family history gives one a sense of ones place in history and for me it gave me sense of resposibility to not smear that name for future family members.
So this TV series is very interesting to me because the people I have learnt about actualy lived in that time.photo album of my garden in my profile http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...my+garden.html

Very addictive! I haven't done much during the summer, but will return to researching now the winter months are coming. Mine is complicated, due to the fact my mothers mum died leaving 4 very young children who were 'taken' by other family members, unofficial 'adoptions' , no records, names changed unofficially etc. my mum was a twin and she and her twin sister were separated and brought up in different families! A number of my great uncles fought and died in the First World War leaving wife's behind to bring up large families on their own,so sad.DottyR

I've traced my father's family back to the 1500/1600s when they were yeoman farmers in Gloucestershire. I have some of their Wills in which they left their livestock and farm implements to their descendants. Some describe the furniture in each room of the house, leaving a bed to someone, or a table or chest to someone else. I find it all fascinating and will be watching this programme with great interest.

My Dad was in the Auxillary fire service, I still have his tin hat, during the entire war they only attended one fire and that was the vicars bonfire that got out of hand. I once asked him how he got the dent in the hat, expected some great heroic deed. Unfortunately he said he got it in the canteen when someone threw a snooker ball at him. Still I am sure he took it like a man. Its all the little stories that bring history to life, One of my mothers relatives was named Ford and went to America, she apparently died in a wagon train when a wagon wheel crushed her head. For a long time I thought this might be part of Henry Fords family and I might inherit his fortune.Last edited by Bill HH; 16-11-2013, 04:40 PM.photo album of my garden in my profile http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...my+garden.html

I have loved all the previous series, including Tales from the Green Valley which was the first. I really liked the Victorian Farm. I grew up on a farm and recognised lots of the equipment from my childhood. My Dad and his neighbours were still using some bits of 'machinery' that were 'state of the art' in Victorian times, despite me being only (HA!, ONLY she says) in my fifties. Have recorded the first one and will watch it over the weekend. New series of Borgen starts tonight too! Love that - like the West Wing with pickled herring

Finally watched the first and I liked it, especially the potage. I like to know what people ate then and how it differs from today. I've considered using alexanders in food before, but I'm not that keen on celery TBH.I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

I wish they didn't feel the need to use the first 5 minutes to recap what has happened before, that's what iplayer is for. I dislike repeats...
Quite good though, I enjoyed the cheese making and the wood steaming.Last edited by Mikey; 21-11-2013, 09:26 AM.I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
