  • Leaking CH radiator question!!

Another question for the plumbers and practical Grapes please.
The drain valve on the CH system is leaking. Its in the bathroom and I can catch the drips in a basin.
Is there anything I can do to stop the leak or do I need a plumber?
Would turning off that radiator stop the drips?
NB, Turning off the radiator and catching the drips is about the limit of my practical skills
    Thank you kindly

I would get a plumber,it might just want a twitch of the nut/another olive/white tape/or a new part, either way,a proper person is the way to go,seeing as your in wales with the winter on the doorstep, you not want it to spurt out when the weather is to bad for a plumber to reach you

Yeah, get a plumber in, it'll only get worse and then you'll have problems

Even if you turn it off they'll still be water in the pipes leading up to the drain valve.

Where is it leaking from? The drain hole in the valve? Does it stop when your heating is on? Perhaps the washer has perished (happened to mine)

I'd get a plumber in too. At least their work is covered then

I put the heating on last night for the first time (yes - I'm a hardy soul!) and noticed a damp patch on the tiles this morning. Not absolutely sure where the leak is but its from the drain valve thing somewhere.
I'll put some paper under it to see whether its leaking from cold and again when the heatings on.
If I was in Cardiff it wouldn't be a problem as my brother could fix it

He didn't do these rads - its a downstairs one and was here already. They re-ran the pipe work to the rad but the rad itself didn't need to be moved.
The drip seems to be coming from inside the drain valve. I've just shoved a tissue up it and it came out damp Its been leaking while the heating has been off.

Have you got a key for the valve? It may just want nipping up.

I too would get a plumber in your situation. If you try tightening it sods law dictates it will get worse. Then you will need lots of bowls.

The drain valve is normally situated at the bottom of the radiator, it will have a piece to which you push a hose onto & a square nut which you undo or tighten depending if you are draining the system.

Lol - brings a whole new meaning to the language of plumbing - just looked up a valve key (59p from a reputable supplier) - never knew I needed one but I better get one in just in case!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Could do with a pic as I don't know if you mean the drain valve or the thermostat valve.
