  • correct way to eat pickled onions?

I have just been given a jar of pickled onions.

THey are quite large onions, at just over the size of a golf ball.

Definitely too big to eat whole!

Problem is, I am struggling to bite into them, without the damn thing falling apart and making a mess

AS I bite down, I end up pushing the onion 'out of the back of itself' if that makes sense?!?!

    Any tips please?

    Cheers

Stick a kebab stick through the layers, across the middle not top to bottom and then bite in?

(I was going to say the correct way to eat them is on Mars but then I felt sympathetic!)

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

I like to eat the large one a layer at a time but Mr Pots says its not nice to play around with your food

Wrap it in a slice of bread and eat it like a sausage roll.
Actually I've no idea - I just made that up
Cutting them in half sounds simple, but if they're still crisp, they shoot off your plate and usually end up under the table gathering fluff

I'm with Bren on this one. As you demolish it layer by layer, it becomes small enough to pop in whole

I bite them 'vertically'. I don't mean I do it standing up (though sometimes I do), but bite it through its vertical axis, rather than across the rings. Mostly though, I cut them in half. I haven't pickled any this year, and when I buy I get silverskins and they are bite-sized anyway.

There is an opportunity for intimacy here, be face to face with your lover, bite into the onion and they can suck the middle out as it emerges, you get the outside half. Oh I need a cold shower now.

What strange costumes they wear in Torquay
And I have to ask, from where would the onion emerge ?
Maybe it would be best if that question remains unanswered...............

                        Thanks for all the replies.

Cutting in half seems the sensible option.

I am going to try growing silverskins next year. I will ensure I do not let them get too big.

                        THanks all

Bill you are such a seductive fellow. With ideas like this you should be writing the gardener's and home pickler's version of Shades of Grey!

Perhaps it could be a festive party game? Who can get the biggest pickled onion into their mouth whole?
