Having just spent a penny short of a hundred quid on a replacement engine for my trusty merry tiller on fleabay, I was reluctant to fit it because the pulley wheel on the original has a small chip. Decided to buy a new un but they are over twenty quid and second hand uns are as scarce as hen's teeth hens teeth.
My little bro renovated one last year so I gave him a phone to find out if he by any chance had a spare pulley. Answer was no (so not feeling lucky at that point) but he did suggest I ask on fr**gle for a complete unwanted or non runner which I could use as spares or re-fr**gle the other bits.
I thought that's a pretty good idea so placed wanted ads on G**mtree and Fr**gle but not in expectation of any success.
Well I of little faith was proved wrong. I had two replies (and neither said sod off).
First was for a Mountfield machine about twenty miles away. Went to see it but unfortunately it has a different set up to the Merrytiller and didn't have a suitable pulley so I had to decline it. Suggested to the lady that she stick it on Fr**gle and someone will bite her hand off for it. She did and got rid of it as expected.
The same day I got another reply. No mention of the name of the machine but I went along hoping upon hope it was a merrytiller with reverse gear. Mine is a pig to wrestle out of corners and ends as it has no reverse gear. Anyway. Bottom line is it isn't a Merrytiller. But it does have reverse gear as well as two forward gears and is even wheel driven . It's a Howard 300. Apparently about 50 years old. Flippin hooge but ideal for my big plot.
Will give me a bit of a project for the winter months getting it going so all in all I'm feeling very very lucky.
But if anyone has a pulley for a merrytiller, I'll be in the GR later
