Saddened and gobsmacked

It seems to me that it's a tragic reflection on our society that we are unable to show respect for the passing of a man who has had such a profound affect on the world. He has been called the Gandhi of Africa among other praiseworthy titles.
Whatever happened to "if you haven't got anything nice to say then don't say anything"!

Mods please chastise me as necessary.

I didn't understand your post initially until I went and checked Jeanied's thread. Now I really do not understand - the thread was not argumentative and one poster says it should be locked and it is! Mods you are wrong on this one

I looked at this thread at different times and one post had been completely changed from the original, so I don't think the thread as it stands now tells the whole story.

These things are always difficult if not impossible to call. It wasn't locked just because someone said, we were discussing it long before that post and, as Wendy said, some posts had already been removed.

It's a case of we're damned if we do and we're damned if we don't I'm afraid. In our experience, these things always degenerate into a slanging match and we end up having to close the thread anyway but not until after a lot of people have been upset and worse.

I agree Patch, most of us can manage to conduct ourselves politely and we never like to stifle good healthy debate but but some trolls like to cause trouble just for fun and we didn't want to see that on such a sensitive thread.

Be assured, we are discussing it behind the scenes to see if we can't find a satisfactory solution for everyone.

Jeanied - Not your fault - Political figures are always going to viewed differently by different people - some people will overstep the mark - that is what the Mods are for

Just the sad fact of life, as to where our Society is heading, due to a lot of reasons.

This used to be a gardening forum! Now it is full of chat and people ready to have a go at anything and everything. Last gardening thread I posted I had to delete due to it being derailed even though I tried to keep it to actual gardening several times.

I've just done a straw poll of the first page of 'new posts' and 8 are gardening related whilst 18 are not.

Other gardening forums are thankfully available.

I thought the mods made a good call. The gentleman was controversial to say the least.

Another forum where I visit has allowed discussion but it had degenerated into name calling on all sides.

Better this way in my opinion.

That's exactly why I commented for the thread to be closed to many opinions!

I did not put up any of mine!

But hey ho seems I fall into the category of a person who has no respect oh well I will be giving this forum a miss for a fair while!

Oh stop throwing your toys around, Darcy. We're all entitled to our opinion, whatever 'side' of things you happen to choose. You've made it perfectly clear, more than once, that you're not going to add your opinion, when in fact, it would have been far easier to not add to the thread in the first place.

As has already been said, this is a Gardening Forum, and usually an extremely sociable and friendly one, at that. The fact that the Moderators choose to close many threads on Race, Sex, Religion, Politics and many other topics, before they degenerate into nastiness, is a good thing, in my opinion.

Now pick up your toys, grab a cuppa, and join back in, this isn't the kindergarten.
