Well, what a strange day it's been today. I posted a farewell thread on the work forum yesterday thinking maybe getting 30-40 hits in a 24hr period with a couple of replies. On leaving work today I had over 1300 hits.......................but what got me more than anything were the really kind posts I received from friends I haven't seen in years. I know I am doing the right thing by retiring, there is no doubt there but after 30+ years, work has become my social life & extended family. I felt really sad for the first time......is it normal to feel this way or am I just being over sensitive?

You will feel a bit strange for a while. I took voluntary redundancy just over a year ago and it does take a while to find a new rhythm to your life. We also moved to France so it's been a huge change, but gardening has helped settle me in to both a new country and life without work.
But it sounds that like me you were probably ready to leave, and that's half the battle. This Monday afternoon we were walking through the woods in gorgeous sunshine and my wife said, "...this really does beat work doesnt it?"
These moments have made the initial feelings of "OMG what do I do now?" fade right away. You'll be fine!Last edited by datz; 11-12-2013, 08:50 PM.Follow my progress in gardening at altitude in France www.750metres.net

Its a very BIG change in your life, so there are bound to be some strong emotions.
But keep your thoughts on the opportunities you are now presented with, you will have a great time once your settled in.
Good luck matey.

You've just opened the door to a new room in your life, you're bound to feel a bit odd. The kind comments say a lot about you and how you'll be missed - here's to the next chapterA garden is a lovesome thing, God wot! (Thomas Edward Brown)
