Old hand operated sewing machine - i'm utterly clueless

I learned on a treadle machine at school - I remember you had to give the wheel a hand spin to start it forwards, otherwise it was just as likely to start going backwards. Hand machines always remind me of this film clip:

I never wanted one until I saw the one the sewists did on the Great Xmas Sewing Bee. I even liked Patrick's applique jumper ~ but only because Patrick was inside it

We had sewing machines that overlocked

My sewing machine has an overlock stitch, but I don't usually use it because it leaves the edges a bit bulky

That's a lot of money just to overlock edges OMG

I think I'l stick with zigzgging them

Quite. However, since this thread started, I've been lusting after digital computerised sewing machines (�4,500 !!!) I know, I hate superfluous punctuation, but I think the price justifies them
