  • Eggs?

This isn't really a hen related question so I hope it's ok to put it here.

I'm just wondering where you all keep your eggs? Should they be kept in the fridge or at room temperature? I keep mine in the fridge but my mum kept hers just in the kitchen and I know other people who do not keep eggs in the fridge.

I know this sounds a bit trivial but as I sell my hens eggs I want to do the right thing with them!

    Many thanks,

    Fi

I never put my eggs in the fridge. I don't know which is the best way and it seems that either is good but that's just what I do. So far, so good...

There is no difference in safety between keeping them in or out of the fridge according to this study.

Points down and in a cool place they will keep at least 3 weeks. The eggs that you buy in the supermarket aren't kept in a fridge.

Thanks for your replies everyone and for the interesting link Hazel. Hmm yes hadn't thought of that, supermarkets don't keep them in the fridge. I think I'll stop putting them in the fridge it doesn't feel right somehow.

You could put them in the fridge, but treat them like red wine and bring them up to room temperature before use.

I keep mine in the fridge - only because I'm less likely to break them in there

No need to keep them in the fridge, less likely to crack when boiled if not kept in fridge.

Mine are kept on an egg skelter on the worktop.

I've had them for over a month and they've still been fine - as long as they don't smell or look different then they'll be fine. You an tell if they're off anyway - I boiled an egg once and when I cracked it open it was like grey jelly. Probably a hairline crack in the shell or similar.

On that note, when the egg is laid the hen coats it with a bloom/cuticle layer that is antibacterial/prevents baddies getting in the shell. If you wash the egg if it's dirty you'll remove this layer and therefore decrease the shelf life of the egg.

I only wipe them with damp tissue paper if they're REALLY dirty. I wash the shell before I break the egg open then - unless it's clean of course

Besides- supermarket eggs are a week/couple of weeks old before you get them

Oh, that's interesting about the bloom/cuticle layer, I must stop washing the eggs so much and stick with a damp tissue.

Mine are unwashed, pointy side down on top of the fridge in the kitchen.

I leave mine in the fridge mostly to save worktop space.

I was always told to keep them out of the fridge. Mine are in an Egg Skelter, too. Mucky ones get a quick light scrub with a dry scourer pad (those green things) or sold dirty.

Why do fridge makers put in a egg section then??? Strange. They are giving us false information here!!
