Please can anyone explain this mystery

Twice we have put a DVD on to play only to be told that it is the wrong region. The mystery is that these are DVD's that we have played on the same player several times before. I have tried them on the computer and they won't play on that either. Have they by some strange means changed their region or is it that the player has reached its sell by date?

Anyone got any ideas please.

Its a mystery without doubt. here are some ideas.

Faulty player, get a new player and pc, (I'll have the pc if you dont want it.)

A friend or family member has bought the same dvd's which were for the wrong region and swapped them for yours when you weren't looking. (Unfriend them)

A malignant entity. (Call ghostbusters)

It was all an alcohol induced dream (try them again)

Your home has moved over the holiday period through continental drift (Check outside, are your neighbours the same as last week?)

Try going back to factory setting for your DVD player... or maybe the disc is damaged or scratched.

Had you said all the DVDs didn't play on the player I'd have suspected someone pressing the handset buttons and accidentally changing the zone settings.

The fact they don't work on the computer nullifies that idea

It is possible to change the region of the player, I believe. Do a g**gle search including the make/model of your player.

It is possible to make it region free completely too, so you wont have to worry about regions...As G4 says, Google make/model and region free....

Some fixed region players will only allow viewing of "wrong region" DVD's a finite number of times,sometimes it is per disc & sometimes it is total number of viewings.

The likelihood is you have dvd's from 2 regions hence switching back and forth

Be careful you only have a limited numbers of switches before it locks.

That applies to the computer - not sure it applies to DVD players where you are resetting the system ?

Not sure if this is of any use but I had trouble playing shop bought DVD's on my PC so I downloaded this little beauty & it plays all my DVD's no problem.

I thought that once the reset on the DVD had been made that was it unless something went wrong - I have changed it on my PC and it was limited to 5 changes but BMs download should hopefully eliminate that problem

You had visitors staying with you over Christmas? Did they watch any DVDs?

Thanks for the advice folks. I will look into reseting the player but it may be easier to buy another disc, they are old films and are cheap on Amazon.

I bought some DVDs, not films on them but images, WW2 in colour etc. Worked fine when I first got them and put in desk drawer. Forgot all about them for a year or so and then went o have a look for something.
Wouldn't work, took them to work to see if they would be OK on PC there but no joy. My boss said that some CD/DVDs break down over time and can't be used. He said a little trick they used back when he was an engineer was to use a black ink marker round the edge and they sometimes work OK.
Didn't work for me but I think there is a pen on the market especially for this, all sorts of products on Amazon
