  • Any Broadband recommendation's..?

The title says it all really.

As its Raining and I am using this site as an excuse to avoid the mountain of ironing downstairs, I was wondering if anybody can recommend or not recommend a broadband supplier...?

We are going back to BT next Friday so I will loose NTL/Virgin cable dial up service.. HURRAH>>!!! (taken a week to download Adobe for god-sake.! ) This means I will have CHOICE of Broadband supplier. Yipee.

Anyhow I was thinking of SKY as we have the digital stuff, or I have Orange mobile which I believe also do broadband.

So do you have any other recommendation's or horror stories..?

If you are thinking of going to Sky make sure your exchange is enabled or you do not get the free one i rang Sky about broadband but was told wireless modem only but they want £40 to set you up and £20 for a wireless card for computor so that got kicked into touch .
i went in the end with tiscali @ £9.90 a month for first 6 months and then £14.00 a month after that i had my telephone calls with them as well
then BT sent me a letter telling me that they was going to charge £5 a bill
for paying cash so they got kicked into touch as well i pay monthly bydirect debit i have been pleased with service i live 2.5 miles from the exchange and get up to i meg service with no limits so i am happy .
but if you go onto Google an type in broadband isp the list is endless .

I looked at one that was really cheap and the gave you a computer then when you read the small print you were tied to them for 18 month - fine if they are OK and any help was charged at premium rates ( arm & leg /hr) so I stuck with BT and so far ..... errr .... wheres some wood

Compare the prices quickly with broadband checker too. Saves a lot of time.

I'm a web developer so I always go for the uncaped services as in no restriction on download amount etc and I've been with Pipex for about 5 years now, they're pretty reliable but if you don't need unlimited I hear tiscali is good. I wouldnt touch BT with a barge pole, they were no end of trouble and despite the fact that they're behind the whole network their people don't know how to deal with problems (we had major problems twice with them and had to prove the problem was on their side of the network)

We're with Orange, and find the service to be pretty good for the price. You can find cheaper, but heard some horror stories from friends about a couple of em. so just rang Orange and asked for the best deal for what we use, did a bit of jiggling with the mobile tariff as well, so we get both cheaper than before, and pretty fast broadband. So, no complaints with Orange.
The Sky one doesn't work on our exchange yet, so there wasn't any point in going with them!
            Hope that helps

            (Just read that 'satisfaction' survey posted by Geo, and I'd like to comment that;
Some friends tried to switch to Tiscali, they started being charged for the phone call service before recieving any equipment, 4 months later they still had no broadband, or equipment.
AOL put junk all over your computer which is nigh on impossible to get rid of.
BT have very rigorous enforcement of the 'fair usage' policy...)

Sky don't seem to know about settings either, they told my OH's mum that they don't support macs but ew found the settings on the net for her and it works fine but it's not a great service apparently.

                      Hi,
I am with AOL and can't wait until my 12 months contract is up so i can change.
I have had numerous problems with them and certainly would'nt recommend them.
Good luck and if you pick a good one then please let us all know.
                      regards

Dont really deal with Domestic ADSL but these are the questions I would ask:
                        Do they do 24/7 support
Is the service capped in any way
What operating systems do they support (microsoft pretty much a given)
What email clients do they support (dont confuse Outlook with Outlok Express)
What rate is the support line number
Is Support from Bangalore type countries
Can you access the line from more than one computer (they dont tie it up with MAC addresses)

When you do get your ADSL it will probably be ADSL2 (ADSL Max) and for the first 10 days your line is under training and from this 10 days of training the best line speed is arrived - you need to hammer the data over these 10 days and not turn off the router/modem, in fact I would leave the computer connected to say an online radio station while you are not at home etc this wont apply if you go for a capped service.

If internet is really important then you might also want to consider a total or enhanced package on the line, the total package works about £3.30 a month and means line gets fixed quicker say if there is a line fault and enhanced is total plus they look at ADSL issue quicker (BT standard is about 40 hours these days).

Me too although if you do have a problem it can take hours to get anybody to answer your call.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We also have Telewest - virgin media.

Was fine until Virgin took over - now endless probs with the box thing (I'm not that technical!) and we have to keep resetting!

Unusual for virgin - they normally get thing right. Convincing them the problem is theirs and not us is a right hassle too.

                              Annoying isn't in it!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
