Mothhawk - good idea, I will locate some lavender, sage etc at first. Lay the foundations surreptitiously.
While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.

This topic really took me back to my childhood. Down the lane from our house was a row of houses lived in by quite old people and they all used their front gardens for veg growing. I was told that it stemmed from the war when no growing space was wasted. I always thought veg looked just as lovely as flowers!

I have a plan to grow pumpkins in the middle of the lawn,I'm thinking very low white picket fence with a border of tall flowers to hide what's in the middle, but need approval from a higher being

Last year I planted half a dozen rainbow chard in my front garden, and they're still going strong in January. Looks lovely as ornamental plants. The garden is a bit of a cats toilet though, so I don't think I'd want to actually eat it.

Ok, Scatological studies aren't my strong point but we have gardeners who use untreated horse and chicken manure, farmers who use untreated slurry, and who also use treated human waste as fertiliser. Why are we so squeamish about pet poo? I can understand if'n it's not your pet, but it still amuses and confuses me.

My front garden is a wild haven but amongst it there are a large fennel plant and a number of chive plants. However, I do have 4 planting pockets along the middle of the length of my drive (think I have mentioned this before somewhere) which have low growing / trailing herbs in them - very convenient for the kitchen door.

Tuscan black kale looks majestic so that would good in a front garden amongst flowers.

Before I got my allotment I used to grow loads in the front garden.
Me too! The first year that I grew runner beans up a wigwam in a bed in the middle of the lawn some of the neighbours looked at it and me, a bit askance. (We live in a quiet cul-de-sac.) However after I had given everyone some beans ... this was also before we bought our chest freezer .... nothing derogatory was ever said. The following year, come spring I was asked "Will you have your wigwam again this year Sue? It's really quite pretty isn't it?"

We aren't allowed any veg in the front garden. It's a new housing estate and when we bought the house it was in the terms

On the plus side, that was only binding for two years and that passed in November
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
