  • knitting help please.

I have just finished knitting a sweater for hubby but it is a few inches short.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how i might lenghten it?
I was thinking of unpicking the cast on edge and knitting on to the rib but am worried i may spoil the whole sweater.
    Any suggestions welcome.

I've got a jumper of my own which I need to do the same thing to. You could undo the cast on edge or just pick up the stitches and knit. I've never done it myself but my mum said she was always doing it when we were little to make jumpers last longer. Be interested in what someone who's actually done it has to say.

It's not something I've ever done either, but there are a lot of tutorials out there. I've found this one:

Oops! How to lengthen or shorten a sweater - Knitting Daily - Blogs - Knitting Daily

Apparently, you shouldn't undo the cast on edge until you've picked up the stitches.

Hi. My mom knitted my little boy a jumper for xmas and of typically he grew. So she picked up the waist band and added a couple of inches to it.
I'm afraid I'm not a knitter but I hope this is helpful.

For anybody thats interested, I followed the tutorial to lengthen a sweater. It wasnt as easy as it looks but it worked. Oly trouble is there is a mark across where the stithes were picked up and it is noticable. However hubby is well pleased with the finished result.

Well done! I was wondering how you went on!
I was looking at a lass yesterday who had crocheted another 2" on her sleeves and 3" on her waistband of a knitted jumper ...I would never say this aloud ...but....

I have had a thought though for you...if the join is a tad too obvious for you, perhaps you could run a line of stitching ( in out, in out) or a sort over overstitch/interlocking stitch ( nope I'm not a knitter so I don't know the terms! )..in the same colour at the join ...and then do the same near the cuffs..and perhaps in one or two places on the main body??
Sort of to distract the eye???

I'm sure you are artistic enough to tweak the final garment if the join irritates you???

Oh how brilliant! Possibly you were knitting a little tighter/looser when you picked up the first row?

              I'm so glad it worked

This is my next project when I've finished the baby cardigan which is currently on the go. Fingers crossed.
