            • I wanna tell you a story. My Springer dog Rosie ate most of my sweet corn plants. This was about 2 weeks ago, I had planted them early and to be honest I was not happy with them, the cold nights we've had just held them back. But it was late Feb and I got that itch we all get, I'm late! Everyone else is sowing stuff! I must get on! Well without lights or heating it was a mistake. Because these plants were not performing about 4 weeks ago I planted 40 more sweet corn so that was 2 months after the first lot and guess what, they are now 3 inches high and nearly as tall as those planted at the end of Feb.

The message from this is sit on your hands until night time temperatures are consistently above 10 C, and the hours of sunshine get longer or go the heating and lighting route.

I have seen on here many people using heat to start seeds early, and that's good, I may do so myself, but you have to consider what to do with those plants once they shoot, without proper lighting they just grow leggy and in the end under perform compared to later sown plants. many on here know this of course but newbies may not and they pay the price. It's all about patience. No doubt I will make the same mistake next year.

I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

                • Really hot here. Just done a load of weeding before the hottest part of the day. I'm not a sun lover. Feel really sorry for my boys - both are doing the D of E trek this weekend. Must be horrible carrying all the kit in this weather. I hope they started early this morning.

Scarlet, don't envy your boys carrying their packs, but at least its warm at night to sleep out!
Heavy rain forecast here tomorrow and Tuesday - the plants could do with a good soak - but I'm not a plant Better get on with dry weather outdoor stuff - see ya later

                    • Yep...I have weeded all afternoon and am sweltering.
Decided to come indoors to cool off and went straight to the outdoor thermometer...22C in the shade!

..and you know what, I really thought it was going to say something like high 20s.

Thing I'm most happy with is that all our window boxes are planted up with red geraniums!
                      Looks like summer now

Seems strange though, cos there are still some trees only just coming into leaf!

                      • Afternoon all! Thank you for your good wishes - I live to tell the tale (just), albeit with a poor time due to not being fit enough and a dicey hamstring. It's been too hot for running, truth be told, and an otherwise well organised race was marred by some poor marshaling on one area of the course, and the race mysteriously growing by an extra kilometer...

I could forgive the organisers (a local school PTA) pretty much anything, though, as they had free popsicles on ice at the finish line.

I've been building by brassica cage then planting out stuff and just come indoors to put the lamb in the oven.

Glad we finally had some good weather over the weekend instead of midweek so more peeps could get on with their gardening .

Thought we only had this morning before the rain sets in, but today's forecast for us shows we have the afternoon too!
Brill! .... Looks like we now have time to get the beans in before it rains ..and OH can ply with his rotavator .

Been a good weekend over all!
