The chap in the entrance hall was very helpful (just imagine coming into that 'vestibule' - ha! - from your carriage!), and the lady in one of the drawing rooms which was lined with portraits of the Spencer/Percy family was a complete gem! She really brought the family tree to life, describing the characters of each of the protagonists and giving a real insight into life all those years ago. Brill.
The guide lady in the long gallery was fab too - there were quite a few latter day royals photos (the Duke of Northumberland who's gaff this is, is one of the Queen's godson's - her favourite if the guide is to be believed) and she was wonderfully indiscrete about 'I was talking to the old butler, who swears that.......'
Actually the lady in the room off the dining room was great too. She let us have a peep at the corner of a carpet from 250 years ago where the weaver had his name and date - it was cordoned off, but she moved the bollard to one side and we all minced across the wooden floor to the fragile bit to peer closely at the weaving. I confessed that despite nose-to-ancient-and-precious-carpet (holding breath) I couldn't see it, and she said that the light had to be in the right place.
