  • Aaaaaaaaaarternoooooooooon Peeps - very wet here the last couple of days. My lovely dry covered chicken run roof has now been 're-jigged' after the tarp roof collected enough water to bath in. I was so intent on making it wind-proof, that I forgot to make sure there were no low collection points. D'oh! I am now filthy and have soaking wet feet.

Oh, and, Hazel - if the kitten is female, I don't expect Dom will mind at all.

      • Afternoon all!

Still undecided about the young cat - I'm going to have a chat with the nurse at the vets to see what their advice is. If they say 'try it and see, and if it doesn't work out you can take her to XXXX', I would probably do it. Or maybe not.

Why can't Domino just tell me what he thinks???????

I just had to gave a look where you are, to be having a 'gorgeous day'! The Highlands! Umphhhh! It's not stopped raining here ALL day. I cooked 'courgette and ricotta lasagne with tomatoes' last night, enjoy your meal.

I think that what he thinks might be unprintable!

Anyway, spoke to the vet nurse, who says although it *may* work out, it might not. Best bet for cats to get on is female family group (mother/daughter/sisters) as that emulates their natural order. Although Dom (age 15 1/2) and the young cat (age 6 months) might learn to tolerate each other, and carve out their own space, they most certainly might not, and it could easily be very stressful for both cats.

And if there is no 'get out' clause (i.e. somewhere to offload the young cat), then what would I do? All the shelters are full, especially at this time of year.

                    Ok, decision made.

                    • Dom is 15.5!? Get the kitten!

TD5s are fab, BB - we have one each now. My lovely Disco was a TD5 too, probably the best car I have ever owned, if I'm honest.

                      • Hazel, the young kitten may well be too much for Dom, it all depends how spritely Dom is. My daughter adopted a kitten that needed help and it sort of ended up ok. The resident cat Roxy took a while to get used to Max, but it changed her personality. She is now called The Wasp., can't get rid of Max now, but Roxy has paid the price I think.

Hazel you know you've made the right decision, you'd feel terrible at Dom being upset .

                          • Well, Hazel, in terms of taking on a young cat with an older cat already a resident, it all depends on gender and personality. Neutered boy cats are the most laid back - they tend to chum along together. I introduced a male kitten - (neutered asap) to the home with my neutered female and she did not like it at all. However they rubbed along together for many years. Then I brought in a young female kitten when they were getting on in years and she was roundly ignored by both. We reached a standoff with the occasional scent marking (peeing) in the wrong places.

With multi-cat households it may be a case of siting resources - beds, food, water and litter trays - in different parts of the house. Now I have an upstairs cat and a downstairs dog.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

                              • Thanks for your input on cat household dynamics, folks

I'd be getting the young cat for me, and not for Dom, quite frankly, and that's not fair. Bit different if one saunters through the door and moves in over time - like Oli cat did - but for me to chose to take in a cat with no back up plan for if it all goes 'orribly wrong isn't the right thing for me to do.

                                Aren't I angst ridden??

When the Next-doors wanted to add a cat to their household, they gave more thought to what markings they wanted it to have than to old Merlin cat's sensibilities. 'Oh, they'll just have to get on with it' was their attitude, and of course, the new and old cat did just that. Far from bosom buddies, but they did, in fact, just get on with it.

Hey ho - Dom has given up telling me it's bedtime, but a rattle of the food bowl will chivvy him up to supper and bed.

                                Sweet dreams, all.
