Had an early morning trip to the hospital with Mum as she's having complications with her last eye op. We were there yesterday afternoon too and have to go back on Thursday. I'd forgotten how heavy commuter traffic can be - this morning's 8.30 appointment was a nightmare. As long as they can sort it, it'll be worth it...................

Right. Just had a a real 'moment' with The Cake. I made the woodgrain fondant (looks good) rolled out enough to just cover the top of the cake on a piece of baking paper.

Evening All....Raining again.


I have the sides on the cake now. I really wanted to make it look authentic and put the decorative 'wooden' shapes on the sides, but it wouldn't work. With hindsight, I should have made them out of sponge and stuck them on before covering with ganache

The Boy has just asked why there's a packet of Rṍlṍs in the kitchen. Them ain't Rṍlṍs, Boy, thems is vintage radio knobs! I may have to eat the leftover ones - quality control testing, don't you know

I'll post a pic of the finished cake as soon as it's done!

Thank goodness, the dog has finally subsided into sleep. She did not take kindly to me doing some of the paperwork mountain today instead of taking her for walkies in the park, so she has gone a bit stir crazy this afternoon/ evening. She has had a mad half hour nibbling all of her teddies one after the other, just to make sure none of them have fleas. I haven't the heart to tell her I still have a load of papers to sort tomorrow

Morning all. Wet and miserable out so stay in the warm! I'm at work, but I've got a sudden overwhelming urge to bake some goodies - reading this thread never helps!
I'm no expert in baking, as I'm more of a savoury man than a sweettooth, but I do enjoy getting stuck in. The eldest daughter keeps nattering for us to make pizza's again so I might do that at the weekend. Anyway, have a good day everyone

Morning All.....We have sun and clouds. 'Twas quite a pretty sunrise. Looks quite promising weatherwise today - no idea what the actual forecast is.

Have to go buy party goodies today. Ma has brought paper plates that are floppier than the serviettes she's also brought. They are not going on my table - they'll give up the ghost if faced with the weight of a mini sausage roll These ones make £land plates look luxurious!

Had quite a decent night's sleep last night; 1am ish to about 6 this morning. Perversely, at times last night, the BH was so quiet I prodded him to make sure he was still with us!

Any news on Mrs VC Snr?

Morning its wet and a bit misty out but no frost I've not baked cakes for ages I just do bread and scones now, but I do like carrot cakes so I might have to make a couple of those.

Trying to think of something humourous to write on this cake......Happy 80th Birthday is quite boring, although to the point.

I quite fancy making another celebration cake, just to practice what I've learned making Dad's. Probably wouldn't get eaten though, there just being the four of us normally, and then two of us don't eat cake....
