We don't have a lawn any more. It's like the bog garden next to the pond has been extended, instead.

The incredibly severe winter of 1946 to 1947 didn't really start until January 21st 1947, and then lasted until March. So we should watch what happens on Tuesday!

There is an article on the BBC website about a solar minimum happening similar to the quiet phase in the 17th Century . . .

We've got bluebells sprouting and pansies re-flowering. It feels like Spring is here and we missed Winter altogether! I REALLY hope this happens!! (Is there a smiley for fingers crossed?)

Just read the article about the Solar Minimum that appears to be happening. The sun should be very active now (a Solar Maximus) instead its gone very quite and at this time no one can explain it.

If it continues then it will be a pain in the arris, the last time this happened they were having 'frost fairs' on the frozen river Thames.

Still not falling much below 2C or 3C here at worst, and the polytunnel gives about 1 or 2C of protection. I'm still gambling that my climbing French beans MIGHT make it through to March and give me a crop though in case not, I've got a whole lot of climbing peas going instead which are pretty hardy. I have some Lavandula multifida which normally croaks with the first frost still flowering away in a window box by the house. And the frogs are still jumping around in the pond behind the house. I saw my first lizard of the new year on a sunny day last week. It is absurd!

My old pappy never stopped telling me that the worst winter ever (1947) didnt start until Feb the 7th and our farm was completely snowed in for 5 weeks or more, the roads were filled with huge snow drifts and they dug a tunnel under it to walk through. The long winter may have had something to do with why I was born in 1948!
