Finished watching the coverage of Chelsea on the TV. In this year of veg growing - and anything edible - found it frustrating - probably wrong word! - that the RHS which is backing the "Grow your own" campaign, and with Carol Klien being one of the main presenters that there was little coverage of how to integrate food into gardens. Has this been an opportunity lost?

I think that it probably was a missed opportunity Scotti.
I agree that it is frustrating, but they paid lip service to us GYO'ers by saying that they (the TV presenters) thought there would be a lot miore emphasis on GYO in some of next years show gardens as GYO was "the next big thing".
I suppose that we should bear in mind that if you look at gardening across the UK as a whole, GYO is still really in it's infancy ( though some of us have been at it since we were bairns) and as a percentage, we are still a minority group.Rat

One of the smaller gardens at Tatton last year had every plant an edible one - it was shown on the TV coverage and I had a very interesting chat with the designer when I visited. She'd gone for the usual things and then quite a few more unusual plants (can't remember what off the top of my head) which I hadn't realised that you could eat.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We wondered at this too, we watched most of the coverage, and I cant even remember seeing anything like the GW special had of Medwyn when he got his last Gold Medal! Big opportunity lost methinks!
On another note, if GYO is the next big thing for next year, then wouldnt it be good if either the GYO team or the Grapevine could enter a show garden! After all, if they arent doing what WE want to see, then why dont we do it, I'm sure lots of others out there would like to see it too!
So, any grapes up for it then?Blessings

hump.
I got the impression that this years coverage was mainly about the big show gardens inparticular the gold winners, and the housewifes favorite Chris Beardshaw.Blogging at..... www.thecynicalgardener.wordpress.com
