  • seed potato storage

I just returned home from wilkinsons, and purchased 2 x 2kg bags of seed potatoes.

THey already have small chits on them.

Am I correct in assuming that I can just knock these off, and store potatoes in a cool dark place until ready for chitting in a few weeks or so??????

if you have a light airy frost free place to put them, no reason whey you can't set them up to chit now

      I have an unheated conservatory.

But wont the chits get too big between now and planting time?

      does it matter?

The chits probably won't get really long between now and planting time. If they do, you have two choices?

        - take off the longest ones; or
        - plant them carefully. Long chits are will still grow fine but best not to snap them off at planting time.

Cold (but not freezing) and Bright the chits will grow incredibly slowly.

I think that knocking them off, to form some more, uses up energy in the tuber - which I would prefer it put towards giving me a bumper crop - but Nature may have provided the spud with far more energy reserves than it needs just to grow.

Got mine in the front porch, hoping it doesn't get too cold if and when snow comes - we do use it as a spare fridge when that happens lol. Had them a couple of weeks now, nothing happening yet

Sounds good. Mine will go directly into the plot late March hopefully. I was concerned that they might go all yellow and mouldy! I guess not...

I chit my seed potatoes on top of the wardrobe as soon as I get them. Done it this way for years and it works a treat. I just keep an eye on the turning if need be. Picked my potato order up yesterday but my egg trays were missing. So need to get some more so I can get mine on the go.

                      Just got mine

I managed to pick my spuds up the other day. Have got them in cardboard boxes in the the bathroom.
Will be chitting them first taking the tubers off and then letting 3 or more come p again then hopefully get them planted out. Only do it this way because an old patient of my aunties said he did it for years.
Thing is though the spuds are at kiddie level and I have found that several have moved about the boxes. In fact I am sure I have heard a couple being rolled up the hall way. Bathroom is the only place really I have to lay them out.

Try egg trays Novice, stops them rolling about (unless of course the kids decide to take them out and play bowls with them).

I never remove any chits - if you keep them cool and light (like my bathroom) they grow nice short sturdy green shoots.

Because there has been some debate about whether or not to take the chits off, I've started this http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...est_76780.html.

If they are in full light, you will get short stubby strong sprouts/chits
