  • Who is in the wrong

A incident happened at the allotment Saturday afternoon. A plot holder keeps chicken and decided to let his chickens out to roam around the whole of the allotment, another plot holder had brought his dog and tied up to the dog to steel post, well after a lot of tugging the the dog broke free and started to chase the chicken and
caught two although did no harm to the chickens.

Presumably there is a no dogs rule on the allotments? We aren't allowed dogs on ours - and people bring their dogs anyway. No chickens either - it wouldn't work with all the foxes.

Dogs should never be allowed near chickens off lead though. It seems to be a case of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I'd have thought that a responsible chook owner would only allow their chooks to roam within an enclosed area- ie their own plot.
I'm presuming you don't mean loose over the site? If so they would be allowing their chooks to trespass- I've seen what damage my chooks can do to crops in a short time!
If dogs are allowed on the site then it would need to be more securely tethered.

Seems like the chook owner was 'inviting' the dog to set chase ( a natural instinct)...but the dog probably needed to be tethered better?

If the chook owner saw the dog, they should have put the chooks away if roaming free... Not sure how a dog would have caught them when they'd be in a run?

Gosh if it had been my Bert (the whippet) they would have been lucky to come back with heads. Dogs and chickens are both allowed on my allotment but dogs always secured.
I don't think any dog would be able to resist a chicken on the loose.

I hope the chickens weren't free ranging over the whole site! but, dog should have been tied up properly - it could have been a child he chased

Wouldn't start trying to decide who is at fault, that is not really going to help the situation at all is it?
Christmas has gone so blaming the chicken owner and holding an Allotment Roast Chicken Christmas Dinner is irrelevant now.
Really sounds as if both sides were a little at fault, and things got a bit more chaotic then they should have.
Quiet word with both sides seperately asking each to be a little more aware seems best.
Common sense is a good thing, shame there appears little of it about.

The title of the thread is clear. There was no request for a solution. It could have been children that the dog attacked. There is an absolute requirement for dog owners to keep their dogs under control at all times.

Impossible to say without actually being there at the time AND knowing the relevant site rules.
Could be the chook owner for letting them free roam.
Could be the dog owner for not paying enough attention
Could equally as well be the fault of any other plot holder that was aware of the situation but failed to do anything to prevent it happening.

Best plan here would be to consult the allotment rules regarding poultry & animals on the allotment site,if there is no definitive rule then talk to the secretary & get the topic on the agenda of the next meeting & press for a resolution at that time.

No offence, but if it wasn't your Chickens, or your Dog...

                          (a) chickens probably shouldn't roam off his own plot
                          (b) dogs should be kept under control (If allowed on at all)

                          The end results could be:
                          Chickens restricted to owners plots
                          and
no dogs at all on site ever.

Both at fault if you go by countryside rules - the owner is responsible for containing his own livestock. Seems like both sides let their animals stray.

Seeing as the fox killed five chickens mid afternoon at our lottie and they were on their own plot I think its a bit lax to let chickens free range all over the place...
We allow dogs but unless on own plot (ours are all hedged or fenced) they are meant to be on a lead..
