What I'd like to know is, if the seed count in a packet is an "average number of seeds", who gets the above average packets? 'Cos whenever I do a count it always seems to be less than the average number. Sweet pea seeds, average 25 seeds. Me? I got 20. So who's got my missing 5 seeds? Some lucky soul must have a packet with 30 in.Last edited by mothhawk; 31-01-2014, 06:23 PM.Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land

Ahhh now that I can answer Mothhawk Commercially seeds are packaged by weight, they start by averaging then weight of a single seed & the pack by the average of that varieties multiple,so if less than the shown number of seeds, then the seeds are heavier than the "averaged sample".
If you want an exact number of seeds the moreveg may be the way to go,I was talking to Racheal at last years EGS & she hand counts each individual packet.

So I've got 20 heavier than average seeds. Put them to sprout on kitchen roll. One has turned to mush and rotted. After a week, only seven so far have started to sprout. So I reckon that indicates that although the seeds are heavier, they've just got thicker coats on, not more food store and growing potential.Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
