We've always just composted everything as well, all in the same heap. Our compost heap is now in with the chickens, and so they tend to eat most of the cooked food, especially bread, rice etc. leftovers. We used to have the compost heap separate and struggled to keep the chickens out of that side of the garden, so now we just let them go for it. Not had any trouble with rats so far, fingers crossed.
