  • A bit of crumpet!!

I knew that would make you look
Does anyone make crumpets and has a favourite recipe?
I've been goggling and there are so many versions - apart from the confusion of what is a crumpet/pikelet/muffin/dropscone............
I mean the round things with big holes in the top that soak up the butter

I have tried to make crumpets a couple of times. I don't have a special recipe but I do find that the batter always sticks to the ring unless it is well greased. I have had the most success using small tuna fish tins with both ends cut off. I have also learned not to cook them too fast. They're not too bad but never the same as "the real thing"

Pikelets to me are thinner than crumpets and aren't perfectly circular - is that a drop scone?

Crumpets are made with yeast. Pikelets are much thinner are not made with yeast and are more like a pancake. Muffins are a different mixture, more sponge like, and drop scones are made on a griddle, the mixture is literally dropped' onto griddle, or rich scones thicker mixture + fruit baked in oven.

            I don't make any I'm afraid ( buy them in M&S) shh!

My pikelets are made with yeast and covered with holes. They have been called pikelets in my family since I can remember.

Well Bill, my mum, came from Lancashire, and they were crumpets, and about an inch thick, pikelets do have holes but are flat ( go have a look in M & S) they sell both.

No, I don't make 'em. CRUMPETS (Bill ) are 8 for a quid (50p a serving ) at my local corner shop, which to me is a fantastic reason to not mess about making them. Grill both sides (top side more than bottom), add marg (very rare I have proper butter in) and jam/marmalade if feeling exotic and dangerous ....

Dorothy, what do M&S know about pikelets! Bagels yes but pikelets no.

Shakespeare mentions the very problem in Henry the 4th part 1.

Hal "My dear Falstaff gorge on your crumpets and let the youngsters frolic with the barmaids!
Falstaff "Ha what doth though know dear Hal, these yeast delicacies with holes in about 3/4 of an inch thick be none other than pikelets! Thou hast been listening to much to those heathen Lancastrians who call all Pee pot a guzunder!
Hal "You have the truth of it dear Falstaff"
