Delia's recipe works well for me, although I sometimes use half and half milk and water instead of all milk.

Being a Midlands lass, I grew up calling them pikelets, but it's sort of been trained out of me and now I go with the flow and call 'em crumpets. And I spread mine with butter and Marmite

    Endless wonder.

I've seen Marmite mentioned in relation to crumpets ! What ! Noooooo, syrup, honey or chocolate spread, even jam, but not Marmite! That's just wrong, sorry.

I'm with Dorothy on this one. A crumpet is no place for marmite. Toast, yes. Toasted (Breville style) sandwiches with cheese, ham and a tablespoon of baked beans, absolutely. Not crumpets though. That's like apple pie and gravy.

And they are really easy to make. Best warm straight off the hot plate

Butter every time. More butter than pikelet in fact.

Now there we agree, whether it be crumpet or pikelet!

If this has came out right it shows what crumpets are, and I prefer the crumpet to be fruity.
                        200g self-raising flour
                        1 level teaspoon of salt
25g of butter or block marg.
                        25g of sugar
                        2 beaten eggs
250mls. of milk Sieve dry ingredients, rub in butter, mix in beaten egg and milk till smooth. Cook in spoonfuls on hot girdle or a nonstick frying pan brown both sides then let cool in a tea towel. If you can wait that long

Currently scoffing 50p worth of shop bought crumpets for supper, with lashings of super chunky vintage marmalade.

                          Tremendous!

I was brought up on the Wirral, where we called them crumpets. You have to toast them then fill all the holes in with butter followed by golden syrup. It's the only way.
