Vince, if you know names, and roughly what years, and what area, the Workhouse 'inmates' are all listed on Census records. You can also find out lots of info, by 'googling' workhouse names.

There is so much info on line, you'll get absorbed for hours!

And if you also put in the name of the a Transport ship, you may be able to find out stuff.

Oh I can, go on, and on...........

Had great trouble trouble finding my x3 grandfather on one of the Census returns, his age had been wrongly transcribed by 50 yrs, listing him as 79 or something, with a wife of 25! Now, that wud have been something!

          Vince,

Australians are as interested in their Ancestors as we are - there are lots of FHS over there - We exchange Journals with some of them. I'll PM you the email address of one of them - I'm sure they will point you in the right direction just as we would if an Australian emailed us.

Very valuable asset - old newspapers.
OOPS - sorry - substitute 'son' for 'daughter' and 'father' for 'mother' - Walter's son who became Robert ll married Marjorie Bruce daughter of Robert the Bruce - can't even blame that on a typo - it was Walter's fault for naming his son after the KIng - memory is failing

                yes indeed!
I managed to trace one of my families back almost to a really 'biggie' Australian researcher...I'm sure we must be just second cousins or great 'something-or-others' apart in our trees.
Problem is finding that link eh???

I got interested in my family tree (Harborne) a few years ago, My Christian name of Harry William or William has been given to the first born male going back hundreds of years. Once you start you often find other people in your line who have done lots of work already. I have discovered 18th century portraits of some. The most amazing thing is an ancestor (William Harborne) who was queen Elezabeth the 1sts ambassador to turkey and a spy for Walssingham. Luckily a proffesor Skilliter from Cambridge university wrote a book entitled William Harborne Ambassador to Turkey (google it) and I found a copy on Amazon! It contains copies of letters from William to the Queen and from her to him. Loads of brilliant stories etc. I have his will . He married Elizabeth Drury who founded Drury lane theatre and his brother John was solicitor for William Shakespears parents. His body is in a vault in Mundham Church in Norfolk. Its the stories you discover that make this such fun, one of my Ancestors took exeption to her sons marriage to a housemaid and she left him one shilling in her will. Cutting him out of the family money. He nailed the shilling to her coffin as it was buried with a note telling her to keep her bloody shilling.
