Dishwasher's blowing a fuse

You're a canny bunch, so I trust you rather than using a different forum.

Our dishwasher (inherited) regularly blows the fuse box. It's not every use, on average it happens probably once a month. It's definitely the dishwasher doing it, not anything else.

Any ideas, you clever people?

I have this problem when i have the washing machine and dishwasher on, if I put anything else on it blows the fuse. Its something to do with too many things on the same ring.

I just have to remember not to turn anything else on if we have the dishwasher and washing machine on.

I thought of that, but it's happening when the DW is the only thing running. We were out at the time it happened today, so none of the lights were even on.

With any intermittent fault, they are sometimes a pain to find. Start with the obvious, check the plug, are the screws tight and cable secure? Is the fuse gripping the fuse tightly on both sides. Inspect the flexible cable for damage visually. Grip the cable firmly in your hand and pull it through your hand feeling for abnormalities potentially indicating an internal break.

After that, it'll be internal inspections, checking cables for abrasions, connections tight etc.

After that it's more specialised testing equipment I'm afraid

Try plugging the DW into another socket to eliminate a fault in the socket.

I agree with the faulty socket! I hope you find whatever it is soon as that would drive me round the bend

Intermittent faults are the worse kind...........hope you get it sorted TS.

The thing that caught my attention is that it blows the fuse box, rather than the fuse in the plug. That means there's either more demand on that ring, or there may even be an issue between the socket and the fuse board .... or by fuse box are you meaning switched fused spur? Either way you need to know if it's the appliance or the socket

Defo try it in another socket, but also try the socket with something else that normally works, such as electric kettle or something else with a normally high demand (something with heater element)

It may not be either the appliance or the socket. It could be the fuse board itself!

Circuits are fused/tripped with the smallest size amperage fuse possible for safety reasons. I have certain sockets that I know will trip if I put certain appliances on them, yet I can move the appliance to another socket with no problems.

Search for the model number.

There was a known fault on some that requires a bit to be changed.

When you say its blowing the fuse box, what is actualy blowing, is it the earth leakage trip that you can reset, the fuse in the plug, or the fuse in a a spur on the wall which just supplies the dishwasher?

If its the trip then other sockets will be affected, probably all the kitchen sockets. Any intermittent fault in the dishwasher is hard to find.(as BM said) Because they are intermittent you can bet it wont be doing it when your looking for it. But basicaly even the slightest leak of current to earth will trip the earth leakage trip, it could be a leak inside is wetting a terminal, or the insulation on a wire or heating element is breaking down. Try to investigate what the machine was doing when it tripped, was it on a heating cycle, or emptying etc. this may give a clue to finding the faulty part.

Try looking at the white goods forum gives lots of diagnostic tips. For spares try espares.co.uk they do all the bits.they also do bits for mowers/trimmers and other garden equipment and even have fitting guides and videos.
Having said that my dishwasher keeps tripping the rcd at end of cycle and I still can't trace the fault 6months on.

my dishwasher keeps tripping the rcd at end of cycle and I still can't trace the fault 6months on

that's reassuring. We will hopefully be replacing the entire kitchen in a few years' time (cheapo BQ units were rotting & peeling after only 3 years), so I can live with it until then. I only run the appliances when I'm in the house anyway (having had a kitchen fire & a major leak before, and scared myself witless)

and it made me wonder if water is getting in somewhere, now and then. The DW is under the sink, and the DiY on this house was completely bodged: everything they put in has broken

It's the only thing on that socket, ie it has its own built-in switch, it isn't a plug-into-socket affair, and nothing else is on at the same time as the DW when it trips the fuse box (TV is on standby, but nothing else, bar the fridge on a different switch, is using electric)
