I actually mean't an ageing population rather than an increasing one!!

Did you know that for every hour our population is aging by 13 minutes, so for every year we are getting statistically older by 79 days.

So statistically someone in their 20's is likely to live to at least 100 and a child starting school now is likely based on current laws to be retired longer than they worked.

What a thought for the day....
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

When I was working,I used to run workshops/ project with young mums, and this included a it of cooking healthy eating and how to manage on a very low income, was very difficult, as it is possible to buy rubbish 'ready meals' for £1.00, in well known 'frozen foodstore', and cheap biscuits etc are much cheaper than buying fresh fruit, for the young mums to feed their children. If the BOGOF offers were on healthier foods, then that would be a move in the right direction.

Also a lot of things we learnt from our mothers doesn't happen any more, a young mum of16, just doesn't know how to cook, and even getting them to consider shopping in a market, was really difficult.

Oh I could ramble on for hours..............

I had large fish, chips and mushy peas tonight.
No fleeting trend, metabolism disturbing, nonsensical self inflicted dietary tortures for me

I do have a slight "calorific stockpile" just above the belt, but that's more through not moving enough rather than from stuffing my face.

4390 Evans. I totally agree with Patchninja, Slimming World is great, I started 8 weeks ago and have lost 12.5 lbs. You really can eat a lot. Check it out. I dont think you will be dissapointed, more likely be amazed at what you can eat and still lose the lbs. Best of luck.

From what I recall there is no such thing as a detox diet. The whole thing is close to meaningless, just look at whatever junk is going down your throat and eat something else.

Nothing actually "detox's" you. Well perhaps dialysis.

Good marketing ploy to get you to buy stuff you simply do not need.
What exactly are you "detoxing" ?

We keep being told that because of the unhealthy eating style of so many overweight young people that the coming generations have a lower life expectancy than we do.

We, well I decided we should go on a diet as my oh who is 6.4 is 24 stone and I'm 15 stone at 5 foot 6.

Ive never been a small girl and Im only wanting to drop 2 dress sizes a size 14 is good for me, but the real reason I went on it is because of my sugar intake. I can sit and eat 8 kitkat chunkies with endless supplies of cups of tea its not hard to do. Ive switched my sugar over to xylitol (Im sure its a tree bark) and half the calories. Im not one for take aways or fast food in general but I do love my butter!!! If I make a sandwich the butter is sometimes the thickness of the bread! I've also switched my butter to a soy butter after learning about the emulsions etc going into normal butter.

On this juice plus detox (ive been on it 3 days) Ive had the worst head aches Ive been in bed for 8pm and sleeping till 8am then waking up with it still there. Im ratty and irritable and I dunno unfulfilled. Im not hungry or wanting food but I do feel there is something missing and I cant say what. Im doing the detox for the rest of the week and with a splash of fish sauce in every other meal Im managing to get through it but think Ill just cut everything down from next week. Its no good having to force fruit smoothies down Its putting me off fruit and veg and thats my main food.

Ive lost 3 pound so far but its not worth this crap xx

Why don't you stop buying kitkats and have some fruit instead?

3lbs in 3 days is a lot,but if you are feeling so unwell and hate it, it's not going to work for you. Have you considered joining Weightwatchers or Slimming world, where they can both help, advise and support you?

Ok - you are right to address your size - NOT because a random tag of 'size 14' is better than a 'size 18'* but because your frame is not built to carry that much. This has implications for your joints (now and in the future), your organs (in the future) and your quality of life with your loved ones (right now).

A detox/crash diet might be what you need to motivate you to get started along the road, but frankly, anything which makes you feel crap/headaches etc for a notional drop on the scales is really not the way to go.

The big deal is to make sure that what you DO is more than what you SCOFF.

As the others have said, a support system like Weight Watchers or Slimmers World to make you accountable (in essence to yourself, but for some odd reason, we can cheat our very own souls but we buck up in front of a bunch of absolute strangers. Odd, but true) is a good move - it's a date in the diary to get weighed each week and a 'club' offers support and inclusion.

You have the right idea about 'proper' foods - my mum cooked all our meals, and so I do so too. The chop/spuds/veg in the week, or batch cooked stew/bolognase/pies all are cheaper than ready meals, quicker to cook and - the biggie - you know what you are eating. Don't do lo-fat substitutes as they are packed FULL of sugar (empty calories) to make up the difference, additives and 'stuff'. Use proper pure ingredients in home made food.

There is nothing wrong with a 'bit of what you fancy' as part of your scoff as long as it is not - oh, a random example, 8 kitkat chunkies. If you can't adhere to 'a little of what you fancy', then don't have those things in the house. If you want something sweet, make sure you have a bowl of clementines/grapes and not chocolate.

The other side of the coin marked 'deprivation of delicious and high calorie foods' is the exercise. It's Spring, get out there and move. Two years ago in January I ran 100m to the Post box. The next day I ran 200m to the corner shop. The following day, 300m the long way to the postbox. etc. I built up to 5k by that Easter, and now I run 10k races. I don't hugely enjoy training, but running = wine in my book, and I do like a glass or two. Oh yes.

I could go on, but have done for long enough - well done for wanting to make a change. Do it now rather than waste any more time.

*these numbers are random. I had to take back a 'large' size dress to TK Maxx the other day as I was straining the fabric across my bust beyond Young's modulus. I'm a size 12/14 top and 10 bottom, so I am not going to go into a deep funk that I am *too big* for a 'large' size dress. The label is wrong, not me.

Fancy diets are just somebodies way of making themselves rich or famous or both.
If you eat like a pig your going to be fat like a pig.
Honest food that hasn't been messed about with and not too much of it.
Yes I like chocolate, but I don't eat it all day, everyday.
Yes I like wine but not a whole bottle everyday.
If you fat your more likely to suffer from illness and your going to die younger.
It's a lifestyle choice, you chose to get the size you are,
You could have missed a few meals occasionaly to stay normal.
                        balanced diet, exercise.
Whinging because of your choice of lifestyle is no help to you, and annoying to others.
"...Very dark, is the other side, very dark."

"Shut up, Yoda. Just eat your toast."

A bit over the top, I think and demonstrating a total lack of understanding about the issues people have with food!

However, it's better for you and you'll love the effect if you can lose. I lost with slimming world and it's now a way of eating and totally NOT a diet. You can pick up second hand books very cheaply to see if it would suit you.

Perhaps a smidgen over the top ???
I was going to state that there weren't any fat people in Belsen, but that is in bad taste, possibly offensive, however it is true.
People smoke and if they get cancer, don't come to me for sympathy.
If you get blind drunk and end up in hospital, who's fault is that?
Life is a series of choices and each choice has consequences.
The only things you have to do is breathe and die, everything else is what you choose.
People who make choices where the consequences are obviously bad inflicted it on themselves.
Stop making excuses, stop saying diets are boring, etc. etc. - stop talking, make the effort, live longer.
In a world where most people don't have enough to eat, hearing that some people have issues with food makes me plain angry - Sorry for any offence this cause.

Not really relevant to the thread but am loving the use of Young's Modulus in talking about dodgy sizing of clothing

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Saying sorry at the end of a post doesn't mean that it's not rude. In theory the points you make are very true, at it's basics losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle should be very easy. However that ignores the reasons why people over eat of chose unhealthy options. If you simply over eat due to lack of education or knowledge then actually could be relatively simple but if you do so as a coping mechanism to deal with other issues, say bullying then just telling the person to pull themselves together doesn't help at all. The actual issues need to be dealt with, to just label it as choice doesn't help at all and can make it worse as the person in question just feels like more of a failure. It's the same with things like depression, in theory the person can just suck it up and get on with life, rather more difficult than that. Support is invaluable but in a way which isn't patronising or at the other end of the scale simply a way of exhorting money out of the vulnerable by wrapping it up in a supposed caring package.
