  • Selling surplus plants at garden gate

    Not sure whether this is legal or whether the law turns a blind eye? I have bought way too many seeds for my small garden and if they all germinate I'll have to get rid of the surplus. We have few neighbours (holiday lets and second homes) so I wondered if it was OK to put them outside our garden gate with an honesty box, a few pence a plant? I haven't got an allotment, I grow them in my garden so no allotment rules apply.

    Honesty box is all well and fair but there always an idiot that will ruin it!

    All the plants for 10p or half inch the money!

    If possibly try a car boot, free cycle or a local Facebook group then you can state what you do and don't want

      Why not?! My neighbour across the way sold his surplus veg that way last year. He didn't make much money - he wasn't charging very much, but it was certainly popular - and nobody cheated or stole.

        I used to sell surplus plants and veg at the gate - and asked for money to be put through the letterbox.
        Never had any thefts and often there'd be extra money put through the door

                No law against it, bar the usual "tax" rubbish. A few pounds here and there aren't going to land you in jail though

                  I have yet to hear of anyone being convited of selling a few surplus plants but it could set you on the slippery slope of international seedling handling. Take care.

                    That's a good thing isn't it? A local UK supplier of all the unusual things from around the world would save me from hanging out on eBay Australia and South African seed sites

                      If you think the plants and money will get stolen put a plant sale sign up a few days before then hold the sale when you're going to be in the garden.

                        I would get a load of thin envelopes and put a stone on top, just ask people to post the money through the letterbox in an envelope provided.

                        I've grown far too many things this year already, which is why I'm looking for a bigger greenhouse!!!, I like to go the other way, don't sell them expand your garden!!
                        I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

                          I read this last year (not plants, but produce);

                          I have loads of extra plants, I'll offer some to our my boy's school, family, neighbours etc and if my missus does a car boot and there are any left by then she can take them too.

                          I have considered selling some here with an honesty box. Maybe one day.

                            I do know on the continent they have their own way of selling things from home. When I was a lad I went on a trip to Amsterdam with my uncle Jim, we saw a lot of red lights in peoples windows, when I asked what they were for he told me it was a sign that they are selling stuff. So you could try that.

                              Uncle Jim's grammar wasn't very good Bill, or you mis-heard him, it was the Verb "stuff", not the noun
