Dirty Plots

Committe meeting last night....I am Trading Treasurer, Scocial Treasurer, on Show committee, Health and Safety committee. Been working my sox off at work, at allots, at home in the garden to make it presenable for the Charity Open Garden.

So any way committee meeting done my bits so day dreaming away at the bits I am not involved in when they start the Dirty Plots.

"Plot no... not been cultivated will send letter"

"Plot 151..covered in weeds....." "HOLD ON" I cry "whats the number?" "151" "thats my plot"...I cry.

I can beleive it the shame of it.....I had to shoot up there before work today and strim it.....

Oh the Shame..

We had somebody take over the plot oppisate us It was rotovated for him but he has hardly been on it (He tried to get it dug for him) It is now covered in weeds. It has some nice wild flowers though.
Big site NOG! our site has only 24 lotties

Oh NOG.

We were actually on site when the allotments officer came round for a site visit and we were on the messier of the plots having just been allocated another. At least she could see we were working and are generally winning. We were able to give her more detail of what we intend doing with the newly allocated plot. However although the council have "cleared" it the rubble is still onsite. Hmmm! Methinks a good reason to not start working down there yet.

Its a trick though isn't it...Ballancing allotment time with work commitments,house/car upkeep and weekend trips out with the kids, and when you keep a sunday clear for the lottie.... it pee's it down...! But despite all that,if your showing some progress and things are growing then into your life a few weeds must fall.

Know the feeling, working full time doesn't half interfere with your gardening. Been over the lottie this afternoon, picked strawberries, planted french beans and did some weeding. I keep promising myself I will go over after work, but by the time I get home I can't seem to do anything except cook a meal and veg out. Must get more motivated, or the weeds will win!

It would appear to me reading your post that you are a one man committee and i would think you should give somebody else a chance at being part of committee

I wish. We have about 450 plots and about a dozen of us on the committee..no one else will help.

Don't we all know that one!

Why is it that all these people want the comittee to do this or that but not one of them will stand up and do a job! I get so angry - 'could the committee just.....', 'shouldn't the committee consider....', 'when will the committee.......'.

Never - wow you have a lot to do - can I help?

We are now bringing in a points scheme on the waiting list. When there is a plot free we say to person at top of list and wat will you be doing on the site? If the say nothing we go to person no 2. if they offer to help we give them the plot and person no1 stays on the list.

I have a plot next to mine which had to be given up! the lady was into growing stuff using wire support; there hidden in the over grown tangle of weeds is yards and yards of thick wire! dexion posts (100's) and lots of broken plastic butts, large containers and old glazed/broken glazed windows......its so dangerous!
How can we get round people leaving such a mess?
any Ideas would be a huge help!

Refundable "Clean-up" deposit of £100 per plot, only refunded if plot is clean or debris on being given up.

That's a good idea Peter, but if only if you get the plot in good nick.... my plot and the one either side of me were all neglected for years and are thick with weeds. I nearly gave up after Chistmas but I would have been leaving it in nearly as bad a mess as I started.

Plus there was a 'shed' on there that had to be demolished and tonnes of stuff taken to the tips, like an old morris minor bumper, a matress, oddles and oodles of rotted plastic, a bent bkie frame and 3 *electric* lawn mowers

There's still a part of me that wishes I'd waited for the council lottie to come available as at least they clear the plot for you ready

The council "cleared" my new plot but I still have three piles of rubble sitting on it and they trashed all the fruit trees so that isn't always the best option. Glad they didn't see fit to try and rotovate it though, I'd have been growing mares tail and JAs on an almost commercial scale. LOL!
