  • Do plant pots breed?

I have a little potting bench situated behind the greenhouse, sandwitched between it and my workshop. There is a high shelf for commonly used sizes of pots, then the potting bench itself with a shelf underneath for larger pots and trays. Underneath that live bags of compost.

All ok so far, however whilst trying to fit back under the bench some trays I found that there was no room. Two hours later everything is now shipshape and all of the types of pot that I use are back in neat piles and rows.

However there are some 130 pots of odd sizes and shapes which I term as "giveaway" pots (given away with spare plants) that are stacked up behind the workshop. Given that I havent bought many plants this year, where on earth do they come from?

Do they breed, do you have the same problem?

You're right Piglet. I have a roughly similar arrangement at the back of the shed, but everytime I go there, there are pots of all shapes and sizes that stack with nothing. I don't remember buying anything. Where do they come from or do they breed in all shapes and sizes .

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I would be interested to see anyone's tidy pot/tray storing facilities cos mine always seem to finish up in a heap!

Of course they breed! It's a bit like the ironing pile? It just gets bigger and bigger!

I should check very carefully PW as I suspect Piglette has got a plant pot tree hidden somewhere I know Granny Dragon has a dirty dish tree stashed away but dammed if I can find it!
It's not the growing old I mind but the growing stupid with it!

Know what you mean GD. I'm sure Mr EB has a dirty laundry tree possibly under the bed.

Re the pots. Mine always end up in a mess, not helped by the very full bag of assorted trays and yogurt pots in the shed. No room in the shed for the pots though so I suspect they don't breed as rapidly when they are outside.

It's not simply a UK phenomenon - when I moved here I bought loads of pots with me and despite my best efforts to give them away, I've now got more than I started with!!!!!!!!!

And they're all sorts of odd sizes but the best thing is that French trays are much much better than the UK ones so I'm dumping all the old ones (life's too short to tape up 20 year old rigid trays now) and going over to the French open weave ones.

The trouble is the ones you use all the time, don't breed! This year I have seriously run out of the three sizes which fit my big trays, yet like you all have loads of odd sized pots.

Like you Snadger, I can't keep them tidy either. Canes are another thing I can manage to keep tidy. They are always in heap too.

In answer to your question, Piglet, yes they do breed, but only at night, under the covers. After all, would YOU if anyone was watching???

                          could you string them up?
piece of string, tie peg to one end, thread the other through pots. keep to same size pots on each string! then hang them from roof.

Well, I do that with my onions so why not the pots?

Or how about making loads of Fert and Lisa clones (a-la-wellie) to sit around on the shelves?

I'm beginning to see a pattern here. We are finding odd ones, not just the ones we know we bought. I'm thinking some were F1 hybrids and aren't breeding true?
