Someone said to me once that she didn't like the carrots her husband grew on the allotment because of their strong flavour! The blandness of the commercial carrot has a lot to answer for. People don't actually recognise carrot taste!

OH wanted to buy garlic 'seed' when I first started on my plot, I made up a seed packet and filled it with cloves of garlic, wrote instructions on the back, he did not know, and thought it came like other small seeds! and yes I love him lots, but had to laugh, he is a fab veg grower now!

There's little to beat the taste of a fresh carrot pulled out of the ground, washed under the nearest tap, and eaten.

I get a similar response to fresh eggs, there's the response to the eggy taste (too strong!!) and I was so proud of my fresh that day eggs too

and the other one is distate they come out of the same place as poo...well all the eggs they eat do, not just mine...

I suppose seeing chickens in action and not shut away in some vast hidden barn brings home to people the actualities of egg production.

The other thing that amuses me is some people's response to using compost and manure, worries over tainting crops, is it safe to eat them etc. As I'm one for snatching left over food off people's plates and going through their bins for compostable items this rather outrages me. Perhaps it's all to do with that divorce from the means of production and the safe little packages in the supermarket?

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.
