I work as an electrical engineer in a granite quarry. We shift some 4.5 million tonnes of rock a year in various forms. I have to keep £250m worth of plant running on a continental shift system (4 on 4 off). There are 9 substations on site, 50 odd conveyors, 12 crushers, 2 coating plants, a rail loading plant which combined produce around 24 thousand tonnes a day.
As well a wearing natty orange overalls with reflective stripes, a hard hat and goretex boots I get to ride around in a pickup whilst surrounded by tipper trucks with a 100 tonne payload. As a brucey bonus I get to feel the earth move every day at 2.30pm when they blast.
It can be cold and wet or dusty and hot but I love my job.
