  • Bluetits will build anywhere....

Went to my local country park at the weekend, and as the car park was a bit full the only place to park was near the start of the footpath, where there is a dog waste bag dispenser like these, set on a post about 4 feet high

I'd noticed last time I went that there were no bags inside it, (not that I have a dog to be using them). Now I know why. As I sat in the car a bluetit whizzed by, and straight into the box with a caterpillar. I couldn't believe my eyes, but as I sat and watched a bit longer, a pair of birds whizzed in and out every minute or so.

This is a dispenser with a hole opening of about one and a half inches wide by five inches high. The box base is about level with the bottom of the opening, so I could see the adults inside, from my car. People and dogs were continually walking within two feet of the box.

I so wish I'd had my camera with me. If they are still there next time I go I will definitely be taking pics.

Lovely We have birds that nest in the fire hydrant every year - drives my poor old Jack Russell mad every time we go past!

A farmer neighbour of mine had a black bird nest on the seat of his very expensive tractor. To his credit he didn't use it for weeks, not all farmers are un caring.

Respect to him for that. A noble thing.

You can see the appeal. It's a fortress. No predator is going to get in there.

I bet it's awfully hot in there in this sunshine. The metal box must get the sun all day long.

Perhaps the dead mouse had been lying around long enough to have some small maggots inside? A bluetit would go for those.

We have blue tits nesting in an outdoor wall mounted ashtray at work ( stickers on to stop us evil smokers using it )
