  • My new "Must Have"

Since joining this forum I have become obsessed with one thing. There are very few posts where it is not mentioned. I have caused raised eyebrows and bewildered looks in my local Co-Op when asking for it. OH is even giving me funny looks as I pounce on him just before he emptying the recycling bin. I have discovered CARDBOARD. It certainly seems to be the answer to so many weed issues.

Lay sheets of it on the weeds to block out sunlight,no sunlight = no photosynthesis = no (or very weakened) weeds

Granny Gardeners Grab Goodies. (By C Bord)

It has been reported that the Welsh end of the Severn Bridge has become a hot bed of vice. Elderly female gardeners are surrounding vehicles and mugging the occupants for.. Yes wait for it... cardboard boxes!!! I witnessed piles of discarded plasma TV's, bicycles and washing machines and noticed gangs of heavily trousered and balaclavered grannies chuckling and stuffing their loot into wheel barrows.

One mugger known to me only as VC and reputed to be a "board baron" shuffled up to me, looking left and right in a very conspiratorial way and whispered "Want some boxes boyo?” I have to admit I haven't had any cardboard for days and agreed to meet her behind a local pup to complete the deal. She disappeared into the night wearing her CCC (Cardiff Card Cartel) jumper, but not before snatching a child's Barbie doll box and gaily tossing the doll into the murky waters of the river Severn.

I'm with you on the card, Bal! Only discovered it this year mesen by overdosing after an IKEA sofa delivery. It is the business and even though I haven't been making my cardboard beds correctly, I'm still seeing lovely crumbly soil appearing beneath the brown layers.

I actually managed to get some heat in my compost bin by layering my "greens" with cardboard. It's wonderful stuff!

One of the blokies on our plot tried telling me that there was chemicals in cardboard and that's why they stopped letting you put it in the green waste bin (it wasn't, it was because of possible contaminants ie sellotape). Shame he's not so worried about the chemicals in his weedkiller that he's so fond of. Bless him. I got some from a shoe shop last year - massive boxes too.
