  • Blanket weed appears from spores, it can be controlled by limiting light ,eg lots of lillies to cover surface. Or Canberra helped by using barley straw.if you want more surface area exposed an electric blanket weed controller which uses radio pulses through an aerial wrapped round the filter inlet pipe is just the job,it doesn't stop weed growth but makes it brittle so it breaks off and can be dealt with by the filter. I've had one about 5 years and no longer have great tangles of green, it takes about 4 weeks to become effective , but I reckon great value at 30 quid

      • Never knew about the shade aspect, thanks.
I have had little or no blanket weed since the arums and another blue spike plant have begun to take over and shade the small raised pond a bit....but am worried my fish won't have enough room now.
One 8" fish, three small goldfish.....how much free space (volume wise) should they need to be happy/ healthy? There is a pond filter. The water is clear.
Frogs live in there too, so it must be OK.

        • I thought blanket weed was caused by excessive nitrate concentrations which in turn causes eutrophication.

                • There is another thread on the vine where it is recommended that growing Watercress was effective at keeping blanket weed at bay.

Once you have watercress you have it for ever , I pull it out by the bin bag at regular intervals, very easy to grow from a cutting though jus buy some from the supermarket and bung it in the pond. I works by pulling the excess nutrients out of the water using them for growth. It's more useful earlier in the year for suppressing green water than blanket weed though

                            • Strange things are happening.

I'm not worried but maybe you fish keepers may be able to answer this:
The fish are using the tower with confidence now but there can be 5/6 fish in & they become motionless to the point where it looks like I've stuck one of those backing papers onto the tank.....I have seen them stay like this for up to a half hour ....any ideas why?

                              • Maybe the water in the tank is quite warm for them, makes them sleepy?

This is a really daft question I know, but how do the fish breathe when they're in the tank. Don't fish have to surface for air sometimes? (or is that just tadpoles?) Sorry if it's a dim question, I know next to nothing about fish
