  • Second hand gas cookers.

    Just for folks info.

Do not now buy a second hand gas cooker unless you get the manufactures installation instructions with it.

Registered engineers are now prohibited from installing them unless they have the instructions to hand at the time of installation.

Thanks Potty - never would have known that!
Does this apply to gas hobs too? Just wondering whether I still have (or ever had) the installation instructions for mine - just in case I ever want to sell it

The new technical bulletin was only issued today and yes it applies to all domestic gas cooking appliances.

Being a cynic makes me wonder if the manufacturers have had to much input on this one.

        You - a cynic? Can't believe that
So, unless you keep the installation instructions for your gas appliance, you can't sell it 2nd hand - or even give it away - or if you do, the only people who can install it are the cowboys
Yep, sounds like the manufacturers were consulted on this one

^^^^^^^^^^^ Some times yes, but its no good spending money and then finding out you can't get that particular model, its a case of buyer beware.

They even introduced a new category how about pre-used. Go on have a guess what that means

They are a few years behind agriculture on this, there has been a requirement that second-hand machinery & implements cannot be sold without instruction manual/handbook for a while now.

It's that cynic again. What's the betting that the instruction manuals disappear off line and you can only get hard copies from the manufacturer at a cost of course.

We recently bought a s/h rangemaster, I found the instructions online easily. So if you buy a second hand gas appliance get one with a well known name they are more likely to have them online than if you buy a "whizzo" cooker.
This requirement is just another nail in the coffin of freedom.

If there is already a bayonet connector for the gas then an Engineer isn't needed . . .

You are so very, very wrong my friend.

The bayonet connector is there to allow temporary disconnection for cleaning purposes only. Only a qualified engineer has the necessary skills and tooling to for instance check the FSD, gas soundness, clearance's or whether the ventilation meets regulation amongst other things.

Just plugging in a cooker and starting to use it is a very dangerous thing to do. Your average four burner free standing cooker is rated at 12Kws so when all burners are working your looking at the equivalent of a small domestic boiler with no flue to carry away the products of combustion.

Apart from all that you could end up in court and quite rightly so because you will have endangered everyone in the property.

Cookers are a strange thing VC and no one seems to realise just how dangerous they can be.

If you think for a while all your other gas appliances fires, boilers etc have flues to take away the nasty's, cookers just throw that stuff out into the kitchen atmosphere. That's why it is essential to ensure complete combustion and therefore not have carbon monoxide being produced.

Never even thought about that before
However, I have wondered why Gas Boilers have to be inspected and serviced regularly but not gas cookers.
For the record, I don't have a gas cooker, just a 2 ring gas hob - and an electric cooker.

Thanks for the clarification, it seems time has eroded my understanding of how things are, just been doing some reading
