  • Colour Changing Star

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been watching a really bright star roughly North-East aspect that changes colour from Red-Green-Blue-Yellow, the only thing I can think of that it resembles is Aurora Borealis Gemstone. Has anyone else noticed it. It's times like this I wish I had a telescope.

If you can mention it's location at an earlier time I can check it out on my iPad as it has the basic 'night sky' on it? It might mention which star/ planet you are looking at?

At this time you have the Summer Triangle visible.
This is made up of Vega, Deneb and Altair. They are all bright and when coming through the atmosphere they will refract and display colour change. These ae however a bit further round and more "South-East" although overhead is probably more accurate.

Low in the North North East is the "classic" for multi-colour, Capella, again bright, part of Auriga but the others in Auriga are somewhat dimmer. Capella is a double star and both are similar size and similar but not the same temperature. The temperature gives the star colour and so you get refracted colour from both at the same time, and hence more colour then normal.

Usually the first thought for a multi coloured star is Capella. It is known for it.
I had started writing it would be Capella then realised I was not 100% sure where it was in the sky. So filled in with Deneb/Vega/Altair. Stellarium gave Capella as very low but the horizon on that seems to be set high, simple planesphere works better.

The other is often Sirius but that is not around at present, and when it is you would probably have said left of Orion. Sirius is multi coloured as it stays relatively low so the light is passing through a fair bit of the atmosphere and the atmosphere is more wedge/prism like at low angles.

Saturn is around but South West really, and it shouldn't change colour/twinkle.

I need to relearn all this for Sept/Oct.

Not yet Nic, the sky is still a bit light. It's usually around 11pm-Midnight when I notice it but will keep checking & let you know.

I noticed a very colourful twinkly star a few days ago - at first I thought it was a stationary helicopter with coloured lights, but it was a star. Quite low in the sky, north north east.

Sky is still light here, so not visible at the moment.

It's out now but needs to get a bit darker to see the colours............about 45°-50° off the horizon.

                            That's damned inconsiderate.
