    Rumours of massive oil find follow Cameron’s secret Shetland visit .....

    Rumours of massive oil find follow Cameron

    it's all about money and I doubt that Cameron and his party would want to miss an 'opportinty'

    BP may have made the discovery that the Clair Ridge oil field may hold some of the largest oil reserves in the world.
    Amazing how they have asked the workers to take extended holiday on full pay until after the referendum

        Is that not what we pay them for? would you be happier if they ignored opportunities for our country?

          The more you look at this the more impossible it seems to become, what about the NHS? What about taxation? If any new Scottish government took the tax off tobacco it would be a smugglers dream come true. "Hey Donald, got anymore of those fags?" "Coming over the hedge now Jim" We could well have a rash of "Nothing to declare" programs on TV and is not the kilt ideal for stashing stuff away? Who owns government property? will we be crossing the border with fleets of lorries to take back MRI scanners and the like.

            I would be sorry to see them leave the UK. They, along with the Irish and Welsh, have stood shoulder to shoulder with through dark times. Together we are strong. Just to see the camaraderie at the Commonwealth Games was so uplifting.

                The only things that comes to my mind are
                United we stand,divided we fall
                All for one,and one for all
                IF it means having a passport to enter imagine the extra wait
                to get one,and will the Scots need one to enter England,the same would apply to the other countries that make us GREAT BRITAIN,

                  There is already talk of border post due to different immigration policies.

                  Following Vince's points what will happen to the national grid or the gas supply lines. Will we cut all the transmission cables.

                  As I said before I don't trust politicians one bit and I think Salmond is rushing this just to get a place in history. Be it to be known as the man who created a Scotland for the better or the man who brought a proud people to their knees. It won't matter to him he will go down in history either way and in his position he won't be the one to suffer if the worst should happen.

                      Anglo Scots/ex-pats

                      I am an Anglo Scot having been born and bred in the 'Kingdom of Fife' where I lived for the first 26 years of my life.

                      In 1964 ' I got on my bike' as the pun went then to better my career and now I haven't a say in the matter!

                      All my family still live in Scotland and the last time I visited them in June I said to the wife as I crossed the border was;

                      if the vote goes 'YES! this could mean that the next time I go home I might need my passport to enter Scotland as technically it will be a 'foreign country'

                      I say this because; it will not be in the EU so the 'freedom of movement' aspect won't apply!

                      Meaning I could find it easier to visit friends on the continent than visit my own family!(sacre bleu)

                      The only consolation I got when I inquired around was that my family seemed to be against it as they do not like the 'Fish People' as Messrs Salmond and Sturgeon have been dubbed, lets hope many others think the same way!

                      The latest poll shows 44% FOR 56% AGAINST I hope it remains this way.

                      As many people have pointed out;

                      There are too many unanswered and indeed asked question to be dealt with before such a referendum should take place!

                      As I see it this is purely a 'Political' thing rather than a 'Need of the People' thing.

                      For example; the Scots have a great deal of autonomy as it is without going down this road!

                      In conclusion; I think that in the main they are a 'canny' lot and that most of them will be thinking like me!

                        Wow this thread is still open! Does anyone remember Finedon Dandy's post about 9/11 and being on holiday as the attack took place? I remember her talking about people staying together - the English, Scots, Welsh and Irish (both sides of the border). People wanted to be with their ain folk. We have more in common than some people want to admit.

                          As a Scot living in England for 40 years I have a great interest in debate. I hated the petty mindedness and bigotry of some I knew in our village as a teenager. A Englishman I worked for in gap year owned the local shop, he would moan for ages about English but he made his living by them when they bought their groceries from him when on holiday. I think it says it all when A Salmon said he'd welcome immigrants to boast the population and fund the pensions but all except English students can have free higher ed.

                            I'm not going to comment on the debate but am surprised none of our Irish members have said what it is really like & if it's beneficial to them.

                              You think many of our Irish members remember being under English rule ?
                              I assume you mean Eire not N.I.

                                You think Scotland are being ruled by the English? I wish I could get free prescriptions.
