The problem with logging on to 'unregistersd sites' isn't that you will pick up a virus but that the site will nearly always try to download some of its own software to your computer. This may be simply advertising for that site, in which case, you will get unwanted popups every so often, these are easy to delete IF you can find them. One of the worst offenders I found was Macafee AntiVirus. I got so annoyed with them I stopped using them. I now use AVG AntiVirus as advised by MicroSoft. It helps if you have a programme installed to check if anything is trying to access your machine without your knowledge or permission. Again MicroSoft use Windows Defender. I run this programme every night after using my computer. It is free from MicroSoft as is AVG. Spybot is supposed to be one of the best protectors from malicious software downloads, I can only say that I use it and have never had a problem. Also, there are quite a few free registry cleaners on the web that will do a good job. At the moment I use Eusing Registry Cleaner; it's easy to use and seems to do a good job. One of the scams 'unregistered sites ' use is if you accidently (or otherwise?) open the site and click onto ANYTHING and that includes the close button, your computer is programmed to dial (without your knowledge) a premium rate number. You only find out when you get your phone bill! So be VERY carefull what sites you open and if in doubt, switch your machine off immediately. If it's switched off, nothing can be downloaded. Reboot and start again afresh. If you are unfortunate enough to pick up a virus on your computer, you'll be happy to know that it was probably from an Email sent by someone you know who hasn't looked after their computer protection adequately!!

Unfoutunately SBP its pretty much the truth. The Internet has become a very dangerous place and there are more bad guys than good ones out there at the moment.

I would consider it very foolish to go on line without a good anti virus(eg Norton , AVG etc). Also use at least two anti spyware programmes (eg Spybot , Adware etc).

Another programmme I have running in the background is WinPatrol. It monitors your computer and tell you if anything is being changed on your computer. It has saved me a couple of times . Find it here -http://www.winpatrol.com/

So if you have these anti-virus programs and Spybot on your PC, do they run themselves or do you have to physically turn them on to get em to do their thing? And if so, how often?
            thanks guys

They run in the background but you have to update them about once a week and run a full scan .With all my programmes it takes me about 45 mins once a week to update and scan everything . Sounds like a long time but once its set up and going you just go and leave it to get on with it.Anti virus and spyware should start when you start your computer up .But why? I hear you say - so you dont forget to switch them on when you do connect to the web.

We run a program called Winpatrol. It stops any program from runnin g without your express permission (plus various other things). The nice part of it is, that you can list the Cookies which have been added to your computer in a session and delete those you do not want on.
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloa...9785/winpatrol for more info. It runs all the time in the backgtround doing various jobs for us.

I rarely use Internet Explorer, as I don't trust it.

We have Mozilla Firefox free version which no1 Techie son installed, download it from here:

                  http://www.grisoft.com/doc/special-a...eecnv/us/crp/0

together with AVG firewall, virus checker and all sorts which you can download for free from here

                  http://www.grisoft.com/doc/special-a...eecnv/us/crp/0

I do use google search though as I get best results for information and not too much carp from them dont trust them too much as they store all your searches (but I have nothing to hide so ....)

Most of the 'protective' software runs in the background while you're doing whatever it is you do when using your pc. AVG has an email checker that checks your mail as you download it. It also has an automatic update setting that checks for, and downloads, updates daily.

But whichever you choose make sure you check for updates frequently. Also make sure you update your Windows software too - set it to auto update, its easier.

I see many credit searches in my line of work, I can guarantee you that your porn viewing habits are about as relevant to it as how often you scratch your bum.

I had a similar thing. SOme exe file installed itself that opens up IE7 and says that if I don't pay up for the subscription in 7 days they will sue me ...... so I remove IE7 as I don't use it anyway Trouble is Norton doesn't see it as a spyware so its still there and the bastards have locked it so you can't delete it!!
