The smoke filled air does become public VC...bit like coal fire smoke but obviously to a much lesser extent.

.......or next door's bonfire or BBQ.
A lot depends on which way the hot air is blowing !!

I refuse to be drawn into an argument as to whether smokers are being considerate or not if they allow their smoke to penetrate the personal space of other human beings.

        I've deleted my posts.

Unless you manage to live quite literally in the middle of nowhere then you are going to be effected by the neighbours. Some people get really annoyed about hearing their neighbours kids playing outside, others by the smell of BBQ or an overhanging tree. Basically you have to live and let live. Plant some nice smelling plants and don't let it wind you up, unless you are sat right next to the fence it's very unlikely to be causing you much of a real problem but when you find things annoying they can ramp up into something far bigger than they should be.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I don't smoke and never have but if you can't smoke in your own back garden where do you smoke?

As for the smell of dog poo... Have you smelt fox or badger crap? It really is disgusting smelly stuff, I'd much prefer to put up with the smell though than not having them visit.

There's more to life than worrying about a smell that wafts over for 5 mins!

I love kippers and sardines for breakfast and kids love them too. The OH does not! He takes a walk when we have them

Difficult one, isn't it!? I am a non-smoker, who is married to a smoker, and I HAAAAAAAAAATE it. But, I have habits that annoy him, and I do appreciate that he is addicted, and has been unable to stop. It annoys me greatly, that he doesn't want to stop, but that's another story, entirely.

Have you spoken to your neighbour about it? He/she may be completely unaware of the distress they are causing you, and a polite word may be all that is required to get them to sit the other side of their garden. Could be worth a try.

A quiet/polite word could also set off some serious bad feeling. It's hard to know how someone would take that.

I think getting upset about cigarette smoke wafting over from next doors garden is maybe getting a bit over highly strung lol - Now if they were crapping in their back garden :/ .......

Nicos, I total agree with you. We had the loud music, parties, dog barking, fights, ect for a year. Now we have smoking, but to be honest I can live with it as I know its lovely and peaceful and I will get a perfect nights sleep!!

I smoke in my garden (I smoke lots) .... if my neighbours had to complain about that, I would get really cheesed off as I never complain about their children screaming and shouting at all hours of the day/night, and I never complain when the husband and wife have rows ... or the nappies on their washline that get hung there on a monday until thursday (my garden is new, and my shriubs against the fence are still small)

this morning (Monday), at 08h30, I strimmed and mowed my lawn as I had a busy day due to the wet weather on the weekend ....

the neighbour had a cheek to tell me 'quote: Thanks for waking me up so early' in a sarcastic tone ....

with a wry smile, I told her where she can get off, and also told her that I am a full time landscaper and told her that the noise pollution laws allow me to mow my lawn from 7am during weekdays, but being a nice guy, I decided to give her an extra hour and a half of 'quiet time' this morning..... I also told her that I assumed that she was awake from 3am as her baby was screaming ....she never responded, but saw that I was cheesed off

I bbq a lot (up to 4 times a week), but always inform the neighbours that I will be lighting up the fire (charcoal) .... this allows them to close their windows, and/or remove their washing.

I normally get on well with neighbours, and let them be .... I recently moved here, and the particular neighbour I am reffering to thinks she owns the street .... rest of the neighbours are great

I can imagine it's annoying, Marb.

But have you ever thought about why cigarette smoke is your 'number one hate'? Could you demote it instead to 'number one mild irritation'?

Smokers get demonized so much nowadays. The media have whipped everyone up into a frenzy. Yes, smoking 40 a day or being in an smoky environment all day isn't good for you. But smoke sniffed over a garden fence won't do any harm.

And my first thought on reading your post was how lucky you are to have a quiet middle aged couple as neighbours!

I agree...I think life is too short to just see negative. I really wish that when I opened a post by this poster, there was something happy or positive in them.
